waiting for the tow comment
Jonathan Eddolls (Chief Race Engineer):
FP2 went pretty much to plan with no significant issues other than the pace isn't where we expected it to be - particularly in the long runs. This means there's quite a bit of work to go through tonight to look to understand how we can improve for tomorrow, as we think we should be a little bit further up on the time sheet. A tow is very important around this track, there's four or five tenths to be gained at least out of the last corner, some cars got those on their quickest laps but our laps were set without a tow. It's quite difficult to engineer a tow in qualifying, but something to consider. There's plenty for us to look at tonight."
it seems the team expect an improvement tomorrow
notice the dig at the tow people
para bellum.

If the wind changes direction and blows to the east qualifying will be fun as they'll have a very strong(45kmh) tailwind down the straight.

Why don't Torro Rosso get Hartly to give Gasly a tow? Mclaren does that regularly.

Last year Alonso was losing out to 2016 Ferrari PU in the Sauber. This is huge improvement.

i feel that Tr has a issue of getting the tyres working properly specially US. when the track temp drop they struggle to get heat into the tyres and thus no grip. qualy looks a good day with more sunshine. so hoping everything goes fine , and bring the tow boys

They need no1 and 2 driver to do that. MCL success towing Alo, STR should force hartley to tow Gas! I like towing game, kinda teamwork ala base runner

a bit off topic, but in China Alonso gave Vandoorne a tow in the first run and then they did it the other way around in the 2nd. So there's no need to force anyone

And how much additional power Ferrari PU has between FPs and quali/race.
If it were in the race on equal terms (same strategy same tyre), it would be decent (or still bit poor coz there will surely be DRS available for the car behind), but in FPs it's nothing.

In fact looking at the speed data (altho speed data in FPs and race is not good reference, which has to be mentioned always), Gasly has only marginal speed gain between Speed Trap (mid part of 2km full throttle zone) and S3 (finish line, near the end of the full throttle zone) whereas all the other PUs have much bigger gain. Hartley has big gain but v slow Speed Trap indicating poor corner exit speed due to possible lower df setting. Also among those below Gasly at S3 speed are both Merc and Vettel, who defo were turning PU down a lot.

Honda has a quali trim as well no? I think the engine and deployment looks good, the car still looked a bit unstable though.
