He's not using the word retirement, rather that he won't race in F1 in 2019.
He even hints in his statement that he would like to come back if the time is right, but lets face it. if he goes now it is not likely he will be coming back, is it?

What is going to change in his favour? I suppose if a big team joins thy may want a name with experience, but other than that his options will be the same as they were this year, he will be a year older and not driven for a year.
Never been an Alonso fan, but will miss him
I guess in theory if Mclaren suddenly starts challenging for podiums in the next 1-2 years he could come back. Or if he wins Indy and achieves the triple crown. But yes, unlikely...
Given his luck, Vandoorne will be winning races next year.

And there goes my reason to stop watching Formula 1 at the end of this year.

it remains to be seen will they retain Stoffel. If that's the case, Alonso pulled Schumi, who, with his retirement, saved Massa's career.

Thank God he ended that misery with McLaren. It was a pleasure to watch him pre-McLaren

You basically said that your reason to stop watching F1, became void because Alonso will stop. You probably meant "and there is my reason to stop watching formula 1".

Other than a small chance Mclaren suddenly picks up the pace and becomes a big team again, i don't see a whole lot of room for him.

If Alo goes to Indy he has chance to be WDC in F1, WEC, and Indy... Probably no one did it before? After, he may go to WRC and so on... It is only too late to be MotoGp champion :D

Ummm... Kimi as an example of doing just this? Granted ALO wouldn't sign up as a #2 driver but there is an an example of one year out and back.

Not sure about this, but Stroll almost certainly going to Force India definitely will

I wonder what Sirotkin's contract states. Could see an Ocon & Kubica pairing at Williams.

And Kimi had a Ferrari to come back to, at age 33 (or 4?)

Could he be keeping an eye on Vettels Seat? If Ferrari keeps improving this year and Seb looses again like a runaway bull, what would Ferrari do?

I hope so in such a big way. I think being a valuable F1 driver to a team nowadays requires more than a one lap time. Feedback, race craft, consistency, maturity with speed and so on. The only way I can see to judge if Kubica has those is for him to be in a seat for a season. If played right the publicity they could get from that would give the screen time so desperately fought for, for the sponsors. Call me biased but I think he is definitely worth giving a chance.
