A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I always liked flat heads...

Id love to see a side- fired tji implemented into one, but with 4 valves, 2 on each side of the cylinder.
They look cool, but they would have to be the most inefficient head design possible!
But rock-hard reliability and an awesome and quite special sound does for me forgiving it. I have a single cylinder flathead with over forty years still running from time to time. And it always start at first try. :D
Really? I don't think I've ever seen the words reliability and flathead in the same sentence before, unless prefixed with the letters "un".

I bet someone's made a 4-valve/cylinder flathead in the past hundred years.
Can't find any...🤨🤨🤨
I don't think you will find any.

Hey Roon, it looks like the two red horns are shouting at each other! Do you know what's happening there, as they seem too close to each other to be effective intakes. And what is the engine? I can't recall ever having seen those parts before...

Cheers,

Jon

La France V12, almost a flat head, but actually an overhead 'side-valve', & with oddly TJI-like porting..

I think its a demo intake showing changable intake runners. The engine is chevy ls based. I think the intake is made by FAST

Good catch. The penetrations don't look similar though so I wonder if they are both for plugs? One penetration looks deeper than the other and the second cylinder from the left seems to have a port on the bottom penetration(?) This is definitely a museum/display piece and I'd love to find some more photos of a working one.

Thanks!

No one thinks this would be ripe for the TJI combustion chamber wizardry? Center the spark plug, and it might just be a thing!

I just found that cover on another sale board also. I found a lot of dual distributor setups, so that would support the 12 spark plugs. Seems the museum piece may be showing incomplete parts.

To answer your question, it seems the t is already there to exploit TJI, if I understand the system correctly.

That would be it then. If one mag went down the engine would still run. I was thinking on it, and seem to remember something (Fire engine??) that had coil ignition and a mag. Before my time, but still 'talked about' when I was a kid.

Edit.

This came up on google. Dennis.

Great! Thanks for that. Cross-flow flathead's gotta be a rare thing.

Twin distributor just missing the second cap. You can see the where the rotor sits in the second body so twin spark.
