Hi everyone,
Im a Year 11 student studying in Australia at the moment. Working in the formula one "circus" as an aerodynamicist has been my dream since i started following formula one two years ago. My question is that what university course should i do in order to find a job as a aerodynamicist for formula one team? and which universities would you recommend?

the only thing i can say for sure about aerodynamics, the further you dive into it, the more you realise you don’t know. i'm studying in the UK at the mo, with my dissertation on boundary layers. for this subject i'd say you need a brain just a touch larger than the one i have!

p.s. becoming a F1 aerodynamicist will slightly hamper you uni social life... enjoy.

The truth of the matter is that most aeros (be it experimental or CFD) in F1 come from UK universities with an Aeronautical Engineering degree (though I have known people with Mech Eng degrees getting jobs as wind tunnel aeros).

Unis are predominantly Imperial College, Southampton Uni, Oxbridge or perhaps Cranfield.

Do your research, don't roll your eyes.

Durham and Loughborough are two with a number of grads working/having worked in F1.

Overseas in the EU there's a few. I'd start with Chalmers - excellent rep in aero.

Sure, some uni's (e.g. Imperial) have a super reputation that's well deserved, but there's no silver bullet. Do your work, study, pick a decent topic, suitable supervisor and a place with suitable resources for your work, get an aero qualification and apply. If your good enough and have the requisite experience you won't be turned down over the uni you graduated from.

Well too bring a couple week old topic back, i've got a few questions. I'm an American student studying what is the equivalent of an automotive engineering degree, at my university. I learn about chassis design, suspension geometry, as well as some aerodynamics. what sort of future can i have in F1 or any form of motorsport right out of college? I would love to do some kind of work with a race team next summer of some sort. I know most of you are in the U.K./europe but what are my chances? And any further advice would be really appreciated!!

P.S. I am currently a part of the automotive x-prize team and plan on joining FSAE as well.

im a student studyin automotive engineering in RMIT it gives a good overview of everthing on cars and i m looking forward to join the RMIT FSAE team next year and i think there is a fair bit of subjects on car aero in the 3rd of 4th year

wish u luck, i had the same dream as well, but now im more mechanical rather than aero
