Technical Regulations for 2009-2015

When I heard about the wider front wings, I thought of something like this at first:




The parts immediately in front of the wheels are steeply curved - something like the flipups on the rear. Since the turbulence generated by the wing would probably make airflow around that part useless for downforce anyway, wouldn't it be possible to use that area of wing-surface to guide air above it?

No, because there's a 275mm height limit in that area.

I'm aware that the specific heights are probably incorrect - but would it be possible for teams to still design a part less aimed at downforce, but rather at directing air over the tyres?

Yes that's possible.

Not exactly 'over' the tire, but generally that will be the idea. The flaps will need to direct the air both into brake ducts and into a direction that suits the trailing parts of the car. I believe it will look quite different on the various cars in the grid.

Also thinking about it i wonder if:
- wheel fairings will be stll allowed. Didn't read anything about them in the regs.
- front wings may be narrower than 1800 mm. On tracks like Monza that might be a viable option.

Yes totally, in fact there's no specification for front wing width. It is only said any body work might not be more than 180cm.

Teams like Honda and FI should be running 2009 spec cars for the rest of the season. I assume that's allowed by current regulations? Since testing miles are limited, they would get a lot of data from the races themselves. The only thing that might create problems are the grooved tires vs slicks.

Not really. At least the 2009 front and rear wing dimensions are very different, possibly 2009 spec diffuser isn't legit for 2008 too and of course SLICKS and KERS are not allowed yet

It is totally impossible to run such a car, it is entirely illegal following 2008 regulations.


As said by modbaraban, dimensions are not the same and slicks and kers are not allowed either.

The topic of this thread is the evolution of rules. One of the most basic principles of rules development is the periodic way that the rules apply to specific seasons. there are many good reasons for this. mainly you want to be fair and keep the playing field level in order to avoid distortions to the championship. There is also the issue that design and engineering of such complexity as an F1 race car requires sophisticated organisations and scheduling. many long term concepts and projects are conceived and designed as early as two years before they materialise on track. so is is vital to be consistent with start and end dates of regulations. particularly in the last decade there has been constant change in the rules and each season had a completely different set of rules albeit with much repetition. It may be possible in some cases to update a chassis designed for an earlier season (as seen last with the Arrows/Super Aguri) but running a car designed for next season in an official event is absolutely impossible as Ogami has allready said. Testing is a private activity which isn't sanctioned by the FIA. The teams have an agreement on testing limits. hence in testing you can bring all kinds of mules and testing prototypes. there is no restriction to test next year technology except for availability of tyres. the exclusive supplier Bridgestone has a limited supply duty and there are restrictions to receive additional tyres to keep the playing field level.

Flip ups are banned also are they not? And also vortex generating devices I thought, like the fins just infront of the sidepods attatched to the shadow plate?

The front wing is brung forward, that mean it actually goes farther than the nose tip.

A part of the barge board is still authorized and in CFD seen bargeboards are indeed here but they are like integrated to the bodywork.

The flat bottom still run towards the rear wheels.

I've modified my first picture of the 2009 248 and have just seen i've skipped the floor going back to the rear wheels which I wasn't sure of but you have now cleared it up Ummm the sidepods where are they allowed and how big can they be exactly?
