For demonstrations/shows I can fully understand the use of the old V8’s - easier to run, cheaper, much more reliable and only need a team of 5-6 people rather than a small army of engineers at what could be a pop-up garage.
I agree with you for Dan Ticktums test though. The test was at Silverstone only a short drive from McLarens HQ so the logistics aren’t an issue, the pit complex has everything they need to run a modern set up and, as an award for a young driver, a car outdated by a whole generation is hardly a top, top prize. Around Silverstone, this years GP2 cars are almost within the 107% rule of the MP4-28 that he drove.
The main reasons the majority of the teams use a 2011-2013 car are as follows:
* Noise - Want to wow a crowd, use the V8s, whilst the V10s were superior, those who have heard the V8s in person mostly agree that they sound better than the V6T-HYs.
* Easier to run - You can run a car with just 12 guys, including two engineers. The V6T-HYs need a team close to 30 odd to run.
* Cost - To run the Lotus E20 it costs just €75,000 (€15,000 more if KERS is used) for a day, the present cars (past 3 years cars) are around €550,000 for a single day test.
* Parts availability - The V8s have so many parts washing around its crazy, the present cars don't have the parts availability.
* FIA Regulations - The present V6T-HYs need 14 days notice period to the FIA to run. The V8s just need a 48 hour period to operate. Remember, the FIA give out licence keys (like what you have with new software) to run the car, this is so they can notify all the other teams and also get an engine run code from their engine supplier approved from the FIA if they need one.
* Easier to drive - Whilst not being a walk in the park, they are easier to drive in comparison to the present cars as the V8s don't have the torque curve that the V6T-HYs have. How many drivers have been caught out by a torque spike in present day cars???
