Thanks for the confirmation. Thats going to make the last sidepod volume (effectively from the fuel tank backwards)difficult to shape, as it needs to extend to just 50mm from the cars centreline and still accommadate clearance for the engine and airbox.

Hi everybody,

if I understand well what you mean,
tangent continuous curve is a term used in surface modeling.
Is used for tangency control at surface boundaries either by using an existing edge or surface, or by defining tangent vectors.
Most of 3D CAD have this command to verify the surfaces.

can some1 explain how the 2009 cars will be faster than the current 2008 cars?? i dont understand

i know that the 2009 cars will have slicks and 50%less downforce, so they'll be better outta the slow corners, but still i doubt they will be faster, maybe close..

-Cars won't have 50% less downforce, 30% is more likely.
-Tyre's grip is not opposed to downforce, it actually multiplies the downforce, hence a better tyre grip will give more grip from aerodynamics.
(grip= tyre's friction coefficient(weight+downforce))
-Less downforce causes less tyre load sensitivity allowing the slicks to have less decreased friction coefficient with speed.
-Slicks allows for more consistent driving, more aggressive.

All those facts may explain why out of any slicks tests this year, cars with the planned downforce cut and slicks tyres were 1 s/lap faster than cars with 2008 downforce and grooved tyres.

Tangent continuous is a mathematical term, meaning that the tangents to the curve (i.e. first curve derivative) are a continuous function of the arclength. This essentially means that there can be no sharp corners in the curve shape. This is further specified by the requirement of a minimum radius.

I could also play mean and point out the FIA inconsistency that the radius can only be defined not for merely first but rather for second order continuous functions, but I imagine that this would be a very minor inconsistency compared to the rest ;)

Has there been any verification on the rumour that Honda had managed to maintain 85% of the 2008 levels of downforce? If so, that's insane.

No but already during tests many teams did not run 50% less downforce but around 30-40% and the OWG said that while they worked with 50% reduction, they realistically hoped for around 30%.

Yeah, just as I had thought.

Has anyone seen any pictures of the 2009 Mclaren that they ran at a RAF base yesterday? Apparently all photographs were made to be deleted but I'm sure at least 1 got through. Anyone?

This sounds like a typical no technical journo\Press officer comment. Finding the dowforce force lost with the new rules may not be such a problem. Finding it comes with huge amounts of drag, is the greater challenge and one the teams are more reticent to comment on.

Is it just me or is the front-wing on that Autosport model too high? I was under the impression that the front-wing would be positioned at it's lowest for many, many years. That looks like the 2001 level.
