Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I think on low rpm it still sounds like cylinder deactivation is working?!
I think they will keep that cylinder deactivation mode but this is not a place it needed to activate

It definitely was on cylinder deactivation at different points in the recording. Why does the Honda engine always sound do good?! The 2019 is even nicer.. A smooth purr when they rev it up! Nice.

It definitely did have the cylinder cut mode on in the video, but towards the end, like last 10-15 seconds, the engine runs on what sounds like all 6. I've never really heard the Honda do that.

What is interesting is the Mercedes fire up video. It sounds uncannily like the Honda. Even sounds like it has a cylinder cut mode as well.

I think there should be an extra week of testing at a minimum. Get the cars in the publics eyes sooner rather then later.
But yes it does sound better then the mercedes and Renault.

Testing starts in 8 days, one week of reveals and the bickering that causes, and before you know it we'll be analyzing the gaps during race simulations.

I did see this. A little notion to ponder... on this Honda Thanks day, what was stopping Honda putting the 619 in the car here to do shakedowns.

This also is the only other time I've heard the Honda run like this. These sounds have never appeared at any other time. Maybe I'm being a bit conspiratory, but honestly, why wouldn't you run it if you had the chance.

That’s a good question. I would assume it wasn’t 100 percent ready at the time. But who knows they could have tested some new parts on the PU and we would
Never know it.

This is from that day. Sounds very aggressive here as well.

What I would give to learn the operation of this engine.
Notice at approx 2:00 in this video, the engineer standing over the cockpit signals to the guy in the driver's seat to do something, it then does some kind of rev hiccup, does it twice (the engineer actually clenches his teeth on the second one and signals for the driver to stop), then after, it sounds like all cylinders are firing, but there is still some kind of changing tone every few seconds, then it drops back to what I assume is cut cylinder mode.

So unusual. I'd love to know the purpose of all this and what these intricacies are doing for it.

Not long until the STR14 unveiling!!!

They'll be ok with cooling, they know how much airflow they need.
