Monza Test- August 2008

Post

This test started on Tuesday for Ferrari where they had GT driver Andrea Bertolini driving, and the rest of the teams have started on Wednesday. This session will end on Friday after a total of four days of possible track time in order to prepare for the Italian GP.

Circuit length: 5.793 km

Ferrari is testing the regular engine cover instead of the shark-fin version. And are running the solid sidepod extensions, carried over from the European GP.

Wednesday times can be found here: F1Technical- Massa goes fastest at Monza

And maybe our fellow member 'Reca' will attend the test, since he is located in Monza.

There are reports about Ferrari testing a McLaren-like torque system. I'm pretty sure you can see the extra lever behind the steering wheel in this picture:

The wider one. I think the clutch is closer to the bottom of the wheel and the gear change lever is pretty obvious.

edit: this might help with the comparisons: Image

can't be sure personally...

Apart from facial hair, though, Honda are still trying

Image
...to do without sidepod vanes
Image
...or with the new main plane of the front wing (apparetly)
Image
..trying out different rear wing shapes.

Not as radical as the Toy ota though. That wings makes it look like an F3 car.

McLaren and others tend to use last year's guidelines a lot (apart from the antlers)

UPD: I've just noticed the lack of traditional fins on the front endplates.

I wonder why Mclaren see the need to use the dumbo wings on the nose even when using their low downforce configuration. Surely they would increase drag which is what everyone tries to minimize in Monza.

I would only think that are being used in conjunction with the knives, infront of the cockpit, to direct more air into the sidepods so as to maintain their excellent reliability for the remaining races.

McLaren tested without the nose winglets as well. This is testing, so they have time to try out the options.

What's with the lap times? 1:23s are much slower than last year

Ferrari is experimenting again with that non-simetric rear wing:

MS was trying it in a 2009 spec car in Jerez, at the end of last year:

lol I think he means the full thing. No turning vanes, simple front and rear wings...just the sharkfin would give it away.

Interviewer: The most exciting moment during the race weekend?
Kimi: I think it's the race start, always.
Interviewer: The most boring?
Kimi: Now.
