McLaren MCL34

Aero seems to be working well, much better than last year, they were having very inconsistent flow in the undercut region.

If i should quess a future update, sidepods would be my quess also, with a more agressive ramp down, but yeah looks like current layout is working so

Interesting serrated vanes on each side of the gearbox - did we already see something similiar yet, I can't remember?
Which vanes are you referring to? The gearbox isn't even visible.

Sidepod design is usually stable for the entire year unless it's a blunder, take Rb13 for example.

Sorry didn't explain well, I mean on 6-slot horizontal curved diffuser vanes / strakes on each side of the middle part of the diffuser.

Fun fact: Lando's fastest time today of 1:17:709 was faster than Alonso's time last year in Q3 at Barcelona (1:17:721). Factors to keep in mind: Lando probably had a light fuel load, difference of tires, and Barcelona was when McLaren brought their new front wing last season. On-track data of the new front wing in Barcelona was obviously scarce, so extracting all of the wing's performance was difficult. However, it is nice to see that the MCL34 is heading in the right direction.
Not just new FW but entire front end with bargeboards. sidepod deflectors and diffuser too. Track conditions were better then as well.
Well, Carlos's time today just shows how much progress McLaren have made. Pretty great to see them doing well!

You can't compare race times to testing times, the conditions are far too different.

I haven't seen dash view footage yet of the car lapping?

Be very interesting to see how much work the driver is putting in compared to others

Thanks for that, not as smooth as I hoped but not as rough as expected so....meh #-o #-o

That was day 1 though, so probably the basic of basic setups

I understand that. My point is that this year's car as it sits now is probably a fair amount better than last year's car even with all factors accounted for including the new regs.

Yeah, that was Day 1. I'm pretty sure they've found more downforce over the past week.

Seen a few outlets suggesting that McLaren have run low downforce setups through testing - anyone able to shed light on that?

Well, if I compare this last picture of McLaren's rear wing to Mercedes' one, it looks like the angle of attack is lower for McLaren. On the W10 the upper flap sits pretty much on a vertical angle.

Other than that I'm not sure we can evaluate downforce by eye.
