Both sentences are true. Stop calling every single word from Mercedes side a mind game. Other teams also praise each other.

What would be the reaction from the public if they turned up and said to the other teams, 'Don't waste your time, we have it stitched up, go home you are going to get smashed'

Not acknowledging others as equals is a sign of complacency , something you really don't need in a sport.

Although, thinking of it, it would be funny if they already tell the field not to bother, requesting the FIA to just hand out the trophies to them .

Because they know they will beat them, and beating a great driver provide a lot more pride than beating an average, so praising Ferrari drivers they´re saying "look how good we are we can beat these awesome drivers"
