But if Renault and McLaren some day fight each other... it will be a different matter. Even if current rules try to minimize differences between manufacturers and customers. Rules don´t allow manufacturers to provide inferior PUs, but if some day McLaren is fighting Renault, I wouldn´t be surprised if Renault cancels their supply of PU for next season

That´s what I´d do at least, it´s common sense, if you invest millions and millions to develop a PU and a team , and then some other team beat you with your own PU... IMHO the only chance McLaren has to become WDC or WCC with Renault is if Renault team underperform and they´re not rivals. Or if McLaren becomes a tittle contender sudenly when nobody was expecting that so Renault can´t cancel their contract till next season.
They can’t just cancel supply... Teams are forced to supply their engines to 3 teams (their own and 2 more)... That was the argument of Mercedes and Ferrari when Red Bull wanted out of Renault and looking to buy their engines, that they were maxed out... It would a fun soap opera if that were the case though and would love to see both Renault and McLaren to be in a position to even have that type of discussion.

I thought I had a short nap, but apparently, I slept through and woke up in 2024. Talk about getting ahead of ourselves.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?

Impossible whitout works engine deal Carlos....

http://www.onestopstrategy.com/article/ ... Sainz.html
Are you suggesting Redbull actually did the impossible?
Those were very different Times. The engine were frozen. Only 1 update a year and the manufacturer had to prove it was for reliability concerns ONLY. Not really an apple to apple comparison.
I was taking about the last few years actually

Redbull might not have won the title but they’ve definitely been winning races, so it is possible to fight at the front with the current Renault PU

The suggestion from GoranF1 was it wasn’t

What do you remeber about 1991? Who won the title or who won 3 races that year?

I have mentioned in the race thread already but just thought it was noteworthy that McLaren have chosen 3 sets of hard tyre this weekend - the only team to do so I believe.

Any thoughts?

The consensus was they’d use em for aero tests since they’re durable enough to be consistently used without wasting a fresh set.

In addition, with Spain being a hard to pass venue, track position will be important and depending on degradation a Soft / Hard stint could be in the cards and better to be ready for it.

As someone else said, they want a baseline to verify updates, given the track.

Yes they can. It is as easy as offering your PUs to any other team at a bargain price to replace McLaren

Even if I’d did happen - which it would t, I disagree... Name 1 team that would want a Renault engine?

The only ones I can come up with are Williams & Racing Point

RP won’t as they do t need the money but they do need Mercedes Power to fight for midfield lead

Williams won’t, as it would cost more money and more importantly time, than they can spare to re-design the car, plus they’re already at the back, again the loss of power would be unacceptable

What a nonsensical discussion.....

All hypothetical. If I were a Renault boss selling a bargain engine to lower midfield teams makes no sense. It’s loss leading and having your engine associated with running at the back does your brand no good at all.

Can we move on as I’d like to hear more about what MCLAREN F1 is up to.

Some statistics, in anticipation of updates in Barcelona.

That's how much McLaren were inferior to midfield leaders in past qualifications.

Australia +0.478 sec;
Bahrain +0.056 sec;
China +0.565 sec;
Azerbaijan +0.293 sec.

That's how much McLaren was inferior to the best of Red Bull.

Australia +0.984 sec;
Bahrain +0,061 sec;
China +1,434 sec;
Azerbaijan +0,817 sec.

Nevertheless, Red Bull seems too far away, in order to impose a fight on them, McLaren needs to play for more than a second, which is most likely not realistic. But, here is to fight for midfield leadership is quite real.

The gap would probably be closer if Sainz had had an uninterrupted session in 3/4 qualis.

Carlos is faster than Lando, by 0.2-0.3 seconds, considering this in relation to RB:

Australia +0.7 ... 0.8 sec;
Azerbaijan +0.5 ... 0.6 sec.

Hope, even the fact that McLaren is still studying their chassis, as it is completely new, and there should be more reserves in it.

Let's see how things go for 2021, McLaren Automotive is growing so if costs go down they could develop their own engines. Or maybe a new works deal like the one they had with Honda. Until then is heads down and fight for 4th or maybe even 3rd next year.
