Merc have done the same as Red Bull did and as long as from front on taking a direct line front to back you only count 5 flaps at any point you are okay (grey area which may get closed).

The bit that was banned on the Williams was the connection at the bottom of the mirror, which you can see on that picture, was broad and twisted. Mercedes therefore keeps that part straight, and unaltered from before. Sure, it likely still is purely aero, but not as obvious now.

Though that bit seems purely functional, copying the two part set up that Ferrari introduced during last season to cover the dead zone better so the drivers can see what's next to them.

Nice view of the route, between the tub and the barge boards, that air is channeled through to the leading edge of the floor. The air comes from under the tub/above the t-tray and is "protected" and turned by the barge boards ahead of the floor. The air flowing though that channel has presumably been conditioned by the nose cape etc. to some degree.

I remember thinking the 2008 cars were so complex with all the little aero winglets they had, but this car and the rest of the field make the 2008 car look so simple and undeveloped.
