F1 is poorer today!
Absolutely. In a massively sanitized sport, Lauda was a voice i enjoyed listening to and he usually spoke truthfully and with a lot of sense.

A huge loss for the sport as a whole.

Very sad to hear about this. R.I.P. Niki. :-(
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Sad news...

My love for formula one started with Niki Lauda. As a 8 year old my dad introduced me to the sport. This was in 1984, the fierce battle with Prost in the mighty and dominant MP4-2.

Of course as an eight year old, the tales of his resurrection were exciting as well as that he quit the sport and came back. Also, the jets, airlines, the utter dominance of McLaren those years were what made F1 my sport of choice. To be honest I was a Prost fan in those days, but Lauda embodied everything F1 is and was. Only later, with the help of internet I found out his whole story trough the years.

His nickname was “The Rat” but I think the Phoenix would be a better name. Not only did he rise from the ashes from his crash but also his numerous returns on track and in the pit. There aren’t a lot of teams he didn’t work for.

Fangio was the first superstar, Senna was the fastest but Niki Lauda was and is Formula One.
