Sainz's overtakes

Not sure if this is a good thing but he had to pass all 11 cars on track, nothing from pitstops. Anycase going from last to best of the rest was more than expected, so awesome job to the whole team, but this time specially Carlos

Agreed...in the keep him honest department...he did make a mistake that broke his front wing and cost him one(Gasly) position.
So perfection, no, but very good.

Mclaren now seems to slowly pick it up every race getting better and better and closer to the top 3...they are clearly the 4th best team and can even defeat the Red Bull of Gasly! On a lucky day with some of the fron-runners out, they can get a podium i believe!
So happy for them! I really think with Seidl and James Key next year they can get into the top 3!
Their line-up seems ok...Lando doesn't seem on Sainz's level yet pace wise and i really don't know how fast Sainz really is! Alonso in the car for one race would be a nice comparison just to see where this car really stands!!

Quite surprised Haas is still that high in qualy comparisons. Also worth noting, every other team is quite close to their position last year, no major changes except for McLaren and Williams.

I would say that in the last couple of races Mclaren has not shown their actual race pace (with Carlos exception in Austria).

The team seems to have been trying to err in the side of caution, looking after the tires, avoiding unnecessary stress on the drive train and driving to a Delta.

This makes a lot of sense given where the team is coming from and what the targets for the season are... 2018 was a very rough year with the team and in 2019 they have a legitimate chance of ending the season as “Best of the Rest”... Therefore bringing the cars “home” and pocketing as many points as possible has to be the target.

So, the end result may not be very flattering and even hurt a little when you are lapped by the leaders... But the fact that they realize that it doesn’t matter if they are 5 seconds from 5th or 60 seconds from 5th, they get the same amount of points for the 6th position is also encouraging in terms of where their priorities are.

It’s great to see that the team is getting positive results without using all the pace in the car.

The Haas is a very fast car on one lap but it destroys the tyres during the race.

The Haas is a very fast car on one lap but it destroys the tyres during the race.

Peter Windsor suggests Haas could be running their car stiff. Maybe the last year’s tyres rewarded stiffer setup and this year’s tyres don’t. Running the car with softer suspension again does impact the aero as the car pitches and rolls more. Maybe they designed a car that doesn’t adjust well to front wing bottoming and stuff like that. Maybe, as a result, they are stuck with a car that has to be run stiff for decent performance, which probably gives searing one lap pace but destroys tyres in race.

Anyways, Haas fans have a separate thread to lament in. Let’s discuss the positivity in our camp.

He was able to overtake two cars running with DRS open (One HAAS (Grosjean), one RP. Not the slowest cars). Funny to see that he had to take a very defensive driving line in both cases after the pass whereas in all other cases he takes a natural driving line, even after passing Raikkonnen very late on the straight. Would love to see different angles from offboard cameras.

I'd love to see Raikonnen late in the race, I think he got to about half a second or less of Sainz, I am wondering about the lines Sainz took. I have a theory that Leclerc would have been able to defend against Verstappen if he held to the inside line. I am curious whether Sainz positioned himself on the inside before blue flags slowed Raikonnen down.

Well, at least Sainz has shut up the people moaning about him being too slow this past couple of races.

He probably thought he owed it to the team.

Carlos Sainz says his superb charge from the back of the grid at the Austrian Grand Prix to finish eighth came just hours after he apologised to his McLaren team for being so miserable and "rude" earlier in the weekend.
