Very good article from Sacrbs in Racecar Engineering - a bit different to the typical articles I've seen which try to assess the impact. Scarbs' piece talks about the process the FIA took to get to its recommendation and has some counterintuitive findings e.g., reducing the underbody power and shifting the diffuser back actually prevents the car from becoming unbalanced in a wake.

Also under 09 regs when following a car downforce is 75% of total vs 55% under 2008 regs.

The one thing I'll be interested to see develop is the shape of the diffuser - there is scope for a smaller, restricted central channgel but it is unclear if the teams will persue this avenue - I stuggle to find a reason why not

still waiting for the issue to pop up on zinio.com

Aside from that, see in the news, the FOTA and Max mosley (which has been designed by the WMSC to conduct talks with FOTA) will meet after chinese GP with the following themes:

-Cost measures
-Future chassis and drivetrain regulations
-Maintaining the competition

The last ones speaks a lot, imho it announces the standardization regs to come and how they'll maintain some kind of engineering competition.

There is another interesting feature in Racecar where the FIA effectively says that anything you can't see will become specified - anything you can see will not be specified ...

F1Technical News- 2009 development behind schedule at Ferrari
Aldo Costa: "The bodywork smoother and more sealed off because we won't have the current liberty of opening air vents anymore, and this has forced us to heavily re-design the cooling system."
I can't wait to see the 2009 spec cars, even in preliminary testing configurations!

Judging by the amount of vents required by Ferrari vs McLaren, it seems McLaren have an advantage in regards to cooling.

This thread is great! I'm new around here and I would like to mention that I'm a complete supporter of fixed amount of fuel per race and less restrictive regulations. The fact is that I don't care too much if there is domination of one team or not or if there's not enough overtaking. I liked when in the 80's and 90's I was anxious to see the new innovations and looks of each car at the start of the season. I enjoyed the diversity in the designs as well. Now, all the cars look (are) pretty much the same painted with different liveries.

with the FIA regulating power output instead of rpm next year the fuel consumption will get into the focus. this year they minimised lubrication viscosity to gain power. next year they will all look at getting their engine efficiency higher as they will all run at the same power. hence Ferrari's high cooling demands point to a lower efficiency. they could already be behind in two fields. they know they are late on KERS and now they may also be behind in efficiency. McLaren and BMW may be more advanced.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

So there actually be less underbody downforce next year? and the diffuser will be smaller? Hmmm very interesting, this is totally contrary to what Champ car did when developing the DP01, and also contrary to the design philosophy of the GP2 car. It is quite counterintuitive, and I hope it doesnt come back to bite the rules makers like the raised front wing rule.

Rest in peace Formula 1.

Doing this will make Toyota, Renault, Mercedes, BMW and maybe ever Ferrari's staying in F1 unjustifiable.

The single most disasterous decision ever made in top level motorsport.

GPs being cancelled, LM's being watered down due to 'noise' and Rallying is a shadow of its former self. International motorsport is slowly being killed off, I wonder what will be next. :(

A very very sad time for motorsport.

At least bike racing is still exciting for now.

it depends whether building your own engine to somebody elses specification counts enough for the manufacturers as I see this is the crux of this issue.

A standard design is tendered and you either buy it, or build it yourself and badge it however you like. I suppose it is like the Ferrari used by Prost and Sauber being an ACER and a Petronas engine....

I think they will buy it..a very shrewd move by Max.

R.I.P Formula 1 - thanks for the good times.
