A car able to follow closely in dirty air signals a significant downforce advantage, not some driver skill difference.
That's a simplification. The issue is how that car loses downforce when following. Having lots of downforce doesn't help if the car becomes an understeering log when 2 seconds behind another car.

Ultimately, the driver has to deliver the result the car is capable of.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

There we go. Pretty accurate summarisation I'd say. Mercedes did make a good call, but frankly it was also a call they would not loose out with anyhow and was kinda logic. Verstappen on the other hand was not in the position to do so.

I think both Hamilton and Verstappen in their respective cars had quite similar pace. I don't think it is fair to call one better over the other in this particular instance (and honestly, Rosberg should have kept his mouth shut over it). That does shame to both really. Both drove well; Hamilton and Mercedes just were better positioned. That's what made the difference.
Yep! I agree with the vast majority of that.

However, the one critical advantage that Max had, which makes Hamilton's drive (and Merc's pace) even more impressive to me, is that Max had clean air to work with (easier on the tires, the car's hardware, etc.). Surprised that hadn't been discussed more in the context of the pace comparison as it's pretty critical.

Yeah, which is why red bull are one of the best at following close behind other cars....

Right.

Hamilton brilliant with a brilliant team call with them being second and in a position to do so.
Verstappen brilliant but being in first they couldn’t roll the dice like Mercedes could also a more grown up drive from Verstappen including taking all the points available by not fighting an unwinbale fight late on.
Ferrari nowhere and shockingly bad. As where the other Mercedes and RedBull drivers.

Yes, similar to Monza 2018, Baku 2019 and moany other races with Nico and Vettel... Lewis is relentless when he is chasing others and it is really tough to shake him off.

Lewis might think he's very funny in PC but he's a proper d!ck sometimes if you ask me. I don't remember where exactly, but he had a nice old jibe at Honda once and what he said about Pierre today was extremely disrespectful and left a filthy taste in the mouth! No one stays on top forever and there will come a day where he will be under the hammer and I know exactly how he will react if someone says something like that about him! Wonder how he would have felt if someone had called him crap in 2011?

OMG. What a pace Ver and Ham had over the rest. Merc have finally been forced to show their true hand in a 2019 race.

Hey, why isnt there a picture of Verstappen over the article about this Hamilton victory? I thought this was one of those pro-Verstappen, anti-Hamilton sort of websites.

Anyway, is this the expected return to normalcy? With one change: RB take P2 in drivers and-or constructors.

Another high finish for Sainz and McLaren.

I think many people did call him crap in 2011. You may not remember because that was a Vettel year. Anyway, I remember Vettel telling other teams in 2013 they weren't working hard enough. In any case, I feel for you and I hope 2021 brings about a good reset.

Merc. and Hamilton won this in the first stint, when they extended and put Red Bull & Max in a position where they had to push on new hards for a good 3-4 laps to retain the lead. Those 3-4 laps came back to bite them in the a$$ in the end.
Yes, agreed. They played it very well and I am sure this scenario was one of the ones talked through. It was perhaps Max his loss when Bottas got taken by Hamilton after the start. Of course Lewis executed to perfection.

Maybe RBR should have tried to up the pace in the second stint even more (If that was possible at all?) and then preempt an undercut. Horner when asked so by chandhok was not willing to entertain that option post race.

Likely Lewis and his merc were just to quick. Great race, very tense and Hungary almost never is.
True. I think Horner was right, since Hamilton's tires were a good 4-5 laps newer in the 2nd stint. A pre-emptive pit stop for Max could've meant Hamilton would've gone to the end without stopping, and made it.
Yes. Very likely as well. Once Bottas was out of the way I think Merc had it. Even If RBR is getting closer (as evidenced by the huge gap both pulled on Ferrari) they still need to make further progress.

You are mistaken. I'm all for Hamilton being a serial winner. He can't help it if the others can't level up. It's his potty mouth that keeps sprouting up.

Check out the press conference. Insinuating that Gasly needs to be replaced at RBR with Alonso.

The Alonso comment was raised in the postrace news conference, when Sebastian Vettel had joined Hamilton and Vettel. Each driver was asked if they would welcome him back to the grid and it wasn't long before Hamilton was cheekily suggesting he had an idea for how Alonso could get himself back on the grid.

Here's how the exchange went with Hamilton, Verstappen and third-placed Sebastian Vettel, who joined them in the post-race press conference.

Hamilton: Well, firstly that's really awesome that he's supportive. I was watching some of the starts of previous years and watching him in his Renault days, remembering before I got to Formula One watching how amazing their starts were... I don't know how old Fernando is now but if he's always going to be a great driver. If he can get a good seat he is always welcome to battle with us. It doesn't make a difference necessarily to me, I'm here to fight whoever is here.

Verstappen: I think it was a bit of a shame I never had the chance to fight him in F1.

Hamilton: He'd be a good teammate for you ...

Verstappen: You had experience with it, I don't know.

Vettel: He doesn't want to [remember].

Hamilton: Speak to Christian!

Verstappen: [laughs] Well...

*Vettel is asked the question*

Vettel: I don't mind -- I don't think he ever really like me, I don't really know why! I don't mind him, I respect him for what he achieved and what he did on track. Bring him back, I don't mind.
Here are his comments, honselty i dont think he said anything disrespectful (already Alonso have made it clear he wants that second redbull seat). people just love to hate on simple comments and havin a laugh! Just finding faults for the sake of it

Just checked it, no direct comment about Gasly, he just said Alonso would be a good team mate for Verstappen. You're overacting.

I wasn’t patrolling the forums back then but why anybody would ever call him crap (as a driver) is just impossible to understand for me. He is astonishingly good. That is probably just the hate /fear Talking. Whenever I see such talk I still get triggered.
