Daimler Q2 loss - troubles ahead?

Daimler has made a 1.5 billion Euro loss in ‘19 second quarter.

Renault looks ok, but Nissan has to lay off 10000 workers. FCA is ok too, but Italian losses are compensated by Chrysler profits. Honda is slowing down a little.

Is this nothing, or are there wordwide problems for carmakers building up? Any consequences for F1?

I work for Ford, I can confirm that its more of an industry wide thing right now, lower sales volumes, huge investment in AI and EV as well as software in the cars.

It goes in cycles really.

Are lease companies involved?

Here there is a shift from buying new with cash money to leasing new or buying former lease car. The leasing companies are asking for discounts from manufacturers on sales, maintenance, etc.

Maintenance of an EV is only replacement of wipers, interior airfilter and cleaning the brakes.

That trend maybe one of the reasons. The general population in Western countries is being faced eith fast raising costs of living with none or not enough pay raises to keep up. So more and morr people dont have the money for a new car.

Buying a new car has almost always been one of the worst ‘investments’ you could make- financially speaking.

It’s better not to own depreciating assets.

In a recent interview Toto Wolff said they will stay in F1 long term since being in the sport would still generate around 3 billion US Dollars "marketing value" for Mercedes, AMG (the target customers being those who buy the performance models) and their partners.

If you take into account how the team's turnover has consistently increased over the years (until 2017, did not find numbers for 2018) and Daimler only had to pay roughly 30 million a year to dominate the sport any hopes they might lower their budget or even leave are will remain unfulfilled.

So if you want them to drop out, keep dreaming.

That is true, but only half the story. The 30-60 million is only for Brackley, the team itself but excludes AMG-HPE, where the PU's are build. The relative low increase of costs of operating a team compared to just be an engine suppler, is why Renault for instance decided to have their own team again, maximising exposure.

Yes i know that this excluded the engines but some of those costs get compensated by the customer teams and it still stands against the billions in marketing value ... and as you say, it seems to work for Renault and the contrary might be the reason why Honda still hasn't confirmed 2021+
