Is there an outside chance of Hulkenberg going back to Williams, instead of to HAAS or Alfa Romeo?

Russell & Hulkenberg would be a heck of a lineup. The Williams team claim they do not require pay drivers. :)

I think we’ll see Hulkenberg next year as the Mercedes sim and reserve driver. Drivers with a super license and F1 experience are harder and harder to come by, especially when most of them are under contract by Ferrari :P.

If Hulk has any self-respect, he'd stay far away from the likes of Williams.
Personally, i figure Hulk will retire from F1 alltogether.
He clearly has lost any form of 'motivation' that he ever had, and he's never gonna win a race.
Though i never got the hype around Hulk, he isn't a bad driver - he's pretty okay really, but, well,
that imho seems just about it. There's some talk about him going to Haas, but i honestly can't see that
happening for a number of reasons but mostly, his f1 time simply has ran out.
not to mention i don't think Hulk-Magnussen is a good combo and neither do i think he fits the team,
but then again neither does Grosjean.

Hulk will excell in LeMans and other racing series. I can see him in Nascar even. But F1, that chapter imho is over.

i think sometimes people look just at the amount of races without a podium for hulk but when you look at the cars he has been in its not like they got podiums every week.
10 beaten by rubens in debut season.
11 test driver at force india. but did enough to get drive for next year
12 beats teammate
13 beats teammate
14 beats perez by alot of point despite perez getting a 3rd place finish
15 beaten by perez but had 6 none finsihes to perez 1
16 beaten by perez but had 4 none finishes t perez who finished every race
17 destroyed palmer in an awful renault
18 beat the high rated sainz and had 5 more non finishes

Good overview!
To be fair, those non-finishes in 2015 were mostly crashes though. In 2016 the retirements were more out of his control it seems. Anyway, the numbers do show he is a pretty consistent and solid driver, akin to Bottas, Coulthart, Barichello - and probably one that can deal with being a number 2 driver in a competitive team just fine as well.

HUL woud be a perfect No 2 at Ferrari.

In the meantime, Nyck De Vries signed for mercedes FE next year. No guarantee he will not go to F1 of course (see Albon), but it does seem he realizes there are not so many options for next year. Too bad, I would have liked to see him in TR or so.

de Vries is not good enough for F1
he took to long to get at the top of F2
2017 he finished 7th
2018 he finished (i believe) 4th
this year with hardly any opponents he first struggled and now finally got the upper hand

FormulaE or WEC is where he belongs

Nyck deserves a chance. Yes he was 4th last year and 1st now because of lousy competion, still making mistakes himself. But F2 is still on flimsy ‘16 Pirelli’s. Who knows how good he is on this years un-wearable “thin-thread” tyres?

on those flimsy pirelli's Russell, Norris and albon drove aswell last year and the year before that Leclerc did too... these are just trying to excuse de Vries lack of real pace and still making rookie mistakes after 3 years in F2...

as said de Vries isn't F1 material (these counts for all current F2 drivers by the way, with 1 or 2 exceptions)

Maybe, maybe not. He took time to mature in F2 for sure, but that doesn't mean he can't reach the right level inherently. Some people just take a bit longer. Albon had his dip in that respect, too.

I don't reckon Nyck to be worse than, say, Gasly or giovanazzi. They got a chance, so why not give Nyck a shot, too? Maybe he is indeed not good enough and leaves after a year, maybe he surprises. But as probable F2 champion, he should at least get a chance.

You really think they’re gonna pick Hulkenberg over Vettel?

Any day of the week.

4-time WDC, toro rosso race winner, Ferrari race winner,
vs never-ever winning not even a PODIUM achieving mediocre driver that is the Hulk.

Hell, i'd pick Norris or Russell over Hulk for a seat at Merc or Ferrari.

Hulk is not a bad driver, but he's hugely overhyped and overappreciated.
