Changes To Qualifying

Post

Says here they are going to replace the current qualifying procedure with a mini race to determine grid positions.
Brawn is talking of trying it out at a couple of races before instituting it the next year..

to be homest, changing format is not needed. They just need to avoid farces, and that can be done with small changes for specific tracks.

Trying it out in a couple races is moronic. Wish they would F off with midseason rule tinkering.

Why not use one driver-one lap system for Q3 (like in 2003-2005)? Or add Q4 with such a system.

They keep insisting on changing the one thing in the sport that doesn't need changing.

But the point is the race isn't it, more than qualifying itself. The Saturday race starts in reverse championship order, then the main race starts in that finishing order.

This should be epic, based on what happened when they tried it in WSeries. No more fastest car/driver cruising off from pole and everybody else basically in speed order already. The winner at the end of the year has to be an amazing overtaker, and also the teams have to design for it.

reverse grid Q race and the start positions based on the amount of overtakes in Q race.

Just to spice up Spain or France.

So George Russel would start first rest of season in sprint race

that's right. What do they do in Monaco? George FTW lol

i suppose this is the kind of thing why they want to experiment with it first. it'll really show some circuits up. Sprinklers for Monaco?

I think on circuits with good overtaking possibilities this can work in an interesting way. I'd love to see it tried out personally.

Places where it would be poor are fewer than places where it could theoretically be interesting.

Number of laps for the sprint race would be somewhat important though, a realistic amount of time needs to be available for the championship leaders to attempt to make their way through the field and then it's up to them to do the business.

I suspect it's an effort to make Saturday a more interesting day for spectators. I think they've talked about this sort of thing for quite a few years, on and off.

What happens if a driver gets taken out in the first race? Does he start the main race from last? That's not going to be used by teams to game the results at all...

If they want to spice up the race, scrap qualifying and just draw numbers from a hat for the grid. Then they could have a Saturday race and a Sunday race, with both counting towards the title.

Or, how about they just leave it all f'king alone!?!!!

It's a bit low profile as basically it was just Mattia letting the cat out of the bag, for example :https://www.pitpass.com/65673/Teams-agr ... es-in-2020

Well if they get taken out it's nul points just like now. Of course there's more risk at the back but it's just the same as the backmarkers have to put up with now, in fact a bit less in theory as the drivers around them are the best.

But more than one will probably get taken out, and they'll still have a chance of points. But obviously they have to do loads of overtaking without getting it wrong. Perfect! What's not to like?

Here's the W Series reverse grid race, easily the best of the season:
