I don't think it's his confidence, I think it's that he has nothing to lose. He has no wife, he has no children, and he's realistically out of the championship.

This is the difference between media world of fiction and reality. "Top" driver Albon crashes in a top car, impartial commentators: yadda, yadda, wind and a "tough" corner.
I'd say it's more the latter than the former. Mercedes' main priority for 2020 is to soften the suspension and reduce drag without compromising downforce. If they manage to do that, they will be back on top form.
Max did the same in FP3, so does that make him a poor driver as well? Its been a bad week for Albon with lack of proper running and struggling with the balance. No its got some truth to it. Basically the point is he has less responsibilities and distarction and can concentrate kn his racing like full time.
