You also mentioned Williams, do they have deep pockets too?
Well, according to Cyril, it wasn’t a B team arrangement.kfrantzios wrote: ↑02 Oct 2019, 22:16Did Renault actually wanted McLaren to their B team?

Probably because RP doesn’t have any heritage? Probably because even though they have invested in the team recently, they are still far away from achieving the level of infrastructure that McLaren has? Probably because even though McLaren has gone through a rough spell in the last several years, it is still the main candidate from the current midfield to join the top 3 in the future?
I don’t think necessarily a B team, but if McLaren wants to go back to the top they have to be as much independent as possible... Unluckily, for the foreseeable future they will remain a customer when it comes down to the engines... Stretching that position to also include potential chassis parts it’s not in their interest and goes against the image that they have built through the decades... Such a partnership, even when could yield better results in terms of Championship position, will probably have a negative connotation to the brand.kfrantzios wrote:Did Renault actually wanted McLaren to their B team?

The story is that Toto / Mercedes will now manage him, there's no suggestion of them getting him out of his recently signed contract with McLaren.
This may have a different outlook once/if the budget cap comes into play. Merc currently spend far more than the cap will be, so may be looking for something to do with the money that will give then (F1) payback.Ground Effect wrote: ↑02 Oct 2019, 21:04You also mentioned Williams, do they have deep pockets too?
not that surprising with Mclaren going with Mercedes engines as of 2021
They don't but what's that got to do with it? I just mentioned them cause they've had a Merc PU since the beginning and Wolff actually came from there.Ground Effect wrote: ↑02 Oct 2019, 21:04You also mentioned Williams, do they have deep pockets too?
I appreciate you trying to look at this from different angles, but it's a no brainer to go with McLaren. Small Soldier has already mentioned why, and there are also many other reasons.diffuser wrote: ↑03 Oct 2019, 00:16They don't but what's that got to do with it? My point was, if they were now supplying a PU to McLaren to have a replacement works team ...Why wouldn't they have just choosen 1 of the 2 teams that have been loyal to them for the last few years.
If your gonna pour money into a 2nd team...any of the teams are no brainers. When I put away my McLaren fanboy ism and try to be objective. I don't see any reason why Mercedes would choose McLaren over the other 2. You could also argue that Wolff has deeper ties to William's having worked and been a part owner of that team.McG wrote: ↑03 Oct 2019, 01:56I appreciate you trying to look at this from different angles, but it's a no brainer to go with McLaren. A complete buyout yes go with Williams or RP, but that's obviously not what Merc want to do.
This is a win/win for McLaren and Merc and also opens up a leave strategy for Merc as a team in the future if they decide to leave (which I think they will).
