What could it have been? An easy answer would be losing one or more of the gurney flaps they add for high downforce tracks... Interesting because nothing seem broken on the car

Yes, from what we have seen on TV, there was no visual damage to both cars

Also, wasn't Alonso supposed to join to the team for USGP?
He was, but had testing with Toyota in Spain, there’s supposed to be a rally in Saudi Arabia coming week.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Not really... Go plug the best times of the midfield in Q2-Q3 in Q1 and you won’t have that happen often.

If sainz did his q3 time in q1 would be P2 in Mexico, P1 in Japan, P2 in Russia and p3 in Singapore. So that sums it up..

You are forgetting something. Midfield teams push falt-out if they have to do second runs in Q1. Because if you had to do a second run in Q1, that means your initial time was not safe. No team will risk getting knocked out in Q1 so they push as hard as they can. What you forget to factor here is track evolution. In some circuits, track evolution can be worth over half a second. And in the U.S the track was evolving rapidly. Midfield cars were finding up to 0.6 to 0.7 seconds on their second lap. Some of that is driver ability of course, but most of it is track evolution.

Long story short. None of the midfield teams hold anything up in Q1 (if they have to do a second run) and in Q2. The reason why you see better times from the same team as qualifying progresses is track evolution (and drivers occasionally completely nailing their laps). This is only true for midfield teams though. Top 3 have such a big pace advantage that they don't find the need to go flat out in the early sessions because they can save power unit life by not doing so.

To get back to your initial point. It is indeed very rare in the current Formula to see a midfield team lead a Q1 session in normal conditions because of their big deficit to the top teams. If Norris was able to do it, then you can take that as a sign that they are closing the gap to those top teams because no other "midfielder" could manage it. (The closest was Gasly, but he still was 0.2 seconds shy of Lando).

So Pete Machin is out at Renault, any takers? Obviously things didn’t work out well for him there, but does anyone think he would be worth bringing on, is there any space for him at all? I think it was always in the plan for Fry to be short term, but I hoped he’d be kept on as the Engineering Director, replacing Morris.
In all honestly I don’t know to much about him, however was he not at red bull for a duration who were and are always very good aerodynamically. Surely he would’ve worked with Peter Prodromou, so maybe if he is good and worth having he would recommend?
Good point ....Not sure why Williams didn't go after Fry. Although maybe he had the Renault offer. Given the same choice, I'd choose Renault too.

Believe the term they used was degraded.... Broken is 0 out of 100 in functionality. While degraded is gonna mean something less than 100%. Obviously enough so that the hard tires temps dropped out of the operating temp window, which aggravates the issue.

Thanks Xero :)

They have a new set of medium and hard available I see- good to have the option and I personally hope they let one driver two stop and finish on the fresh mediums and get racy on lower fuel.

You aren’t considering track evolution... The reason why the times increase from session to session is because of the additional rubber and grip on the track.

At this point of the race, we are clearly not 4th fastest. Even Gasly is quicker than Sainz. Lets hope hards work as expected today..

Norris didnt have any fresh softs for the second pit stop or any mediums for the first? At least they were right for the second pit stop. Sainz should have done the same. I guess they splitted strategy

Good race for the team... Lando almost got Daniel (he needed one more lap)... Yes, the pace wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible either.

P7 and P8 it’s a good result, back to scoring points with both cars and keeping the distance to Renault for the fight for 4th.

Missed that 6th place for only 1 second. The 2nd pit stop costed us and the lack of softs.Still the car is overall 4th best. Congratulations for capturing 4th place. Very impressive year and we clearly see results. Now to do two good final races and then onwards to nullifying the difference as we are faster in development with the new Adrian Newey that is James Key on the team. I know we can do it.

Lot of you guys are becoming extremely critical. The team looked nowhere on Friday, looked quite fast on Saturday but said they expect to struggle more on Sunday due to wind changing back to the one on Friday. In the race, it was quite close. In this rule formula it seems that if you get ahead, you usually gain enough to stay ahead.

Norris raced a really good race, great start, great passes around Ricciardo and Vettel only to lose out to extremely experienced, fast and dive bombing Ricciardo (and that by 0.4 seconds due to yellows at the end).

Sainz got pushed outside at the start, yet was able to climb back to P8.

Great solid race by everyone. These kind of races need to become regular. Get double points finish even when things aren't really going your way.
