Changes To Qualifying

Looking like the idea was rejected by the teams, so no changes for next year.

A plan to introduce qualifying races at three rounds on the 2020 F1 calendar has failed to win the unanimous support needed to ensure it will go ahead, RaceFans has learned.

However the proposal could still go ahead if it is agreed before the start of the 2020 F1 season in March. The plan was discussed at a meeting between teams and representatives of F1 and the FIA today in Paris.

Here is a proposal:
A team must reuse all the tires that they used during qualifying.
(There will be an exception for wet conditions, of course. Something like: if there’s rain during race or qualifying, they can substitute a wet or inter set for a dry set - or vice versa).
That will enable either more pit stops for the faster teams or more aggressive tire choices for midfield teams so that they can be at the front row and get some extra attention.

Interesting idea, although I feel the top teams will do Q1 and Q2 on the same set of Mediums and then use 1 set of softs in Q3 and just do 1 run. So qualifying will be less entertaining. If they need to do a 2 stop because of tyre deg then they will just use an extra set of the required tyre and do a lap in Q3 with that tyre.

What about adding a Q4 for the top 5 cars in Q3? In Q4 these 5 cars must use only the tyres they used for their best time in Q2 and must start the race on those tyres.

This would make tyre strategy more complex for the top 5 cars and give those cars in places 6 to 10 an advantage in tyre wear. That could result in closer racing between the top 10 cars and more exciting pit stop strategies? Perhaps.....

How about not messing with the only thing perfect in F1? Knockout qualifying has been the most exciting part of a race weekend since it was introduced.

Teams just need to get better.

I like a rehash of that. All tyres used in the race must have run in q at some time. It may need slightly longer times in one of the sessions, and as you say, change with wets. We will know beforehand which tyres are available to teams and there will be a variation in the use of tyres to get through and those needed for a good finish or start.

Having said that, I have always feel the tyres should not be mandated at all. Run the whole race on 1 set of hard or use 5 sets of soft if you kept them
