Bugger, I hope it is nothing more serious than a broken leg; he's so fit I reckon he'll be right by January testing with the RB5. [-o<

It sounds pretty serious from the news with multiple fractues. Lets hope he recovers fully and quickly. Mark Webber is a real sportsman and it would be a shame to see his 2009 season compromised.

Mark Involved in Cycling Accident During the Challenge
22 November 2008 | 11:18pm

22 November, 2008

Mark Webber was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle while cycling on the roads around Port Arthur, Tasmania, on the penultimate day of his annual charity adventure racing event, the Pure Tasmania Challenge, today.

Mark was treated immediately at the scene by event medical staff before being transferred to a Tasmanian hospital where a rod was inserted in his right leg. The surgery was a success and Mark is now very focussed on his rehabilitation. Mark suffered no other injuries from the accident, other than some bruising and a scratch on his left arm.

It is likely that Mark will remain in Tasmania for a few days before continuing his recovery in Europe.

While it looks like Mark is out of the winter testing programme, it is fully expected he will make the starting grid in Melbourne next March.

Mark has said he's relieved to know the driver of the motor vehicle was uninjured and expressed his thanks to the many well wishes from family, friends and supporters.

Odd comment about being glad the driver is ok...bikes tend to make little impact on a 4x4!

Still it does now sound like Webber was on the road in a place he shouldn't have been (cutting a corner or something like that?)...otherwise there would be arrests etc..

Im just glad Webbo will be on the grid in Melbourne - I really hope he can get at least 1 test under his belt before hand due to the radically different nature of the '09 cars tho!

I was quite shock when I heard this news. A car apparently hit him head-on when he was cycling.
I normally don't like Webber coz he is just too arrogant. but I do give all my best wishes on a swift recovery!

My question is this:

Is Coulthard going to dtand in and do the winter program with Red Bull now to develop the RB5, or is Vettel going to get a rookie to help him?

I don't know Red Bull's tester lineup, but maybe we will see the STR4 and RB5 launch together, so the winter program can be done in tandem to minimize the setback on Red Bull.

Anyways, good luck to Mark. He isn't arrogant, he is straight and always shows respect to teams and drivers that I have seen. I make it a point to not have favorites, but Webber and Vettel both strike me as guys that I would get along with very well on a personal level.

Actually, I find that calling him arrogant is almost bewildering. Can you give me a few quotes that give you that impression of him? Because I don't recall any...

Arrogant??? Mate Webbo embodies the very spirit of the "Aussie way" - we call a spade a spade and try to give everyone a fair go, no one in the F1 field treats their fans and ppl in general as well as Mark Webber does!

As much as I like and support Mark Webber, I cannot stop wondering how you are thinking when you participate in something as challanging as that in preparation for your obvious make-or-break season in F1?

Ever since Patrick Depallier's hang-gliding accident in 1979, I thought F1 drivers were strictly told what are appropriate activities on your free time.
McLaren drivers not aloud to drink for example, which is clearly the reason why Kimi left.

Besides that, colliding with a road-car on a mountain-bike contest, go figure?

Xpensive its a charity challenge organised by Webber which is in its 5th year and has raised literally millions for charity - the road was supposedly closed - Mark isnt an idiot and he happens to be a fitness freak who enjoys this sort of extreme sport - you can get hit by a bus crossing the road this was an unfortunate accident - heres a link to the Challenge site http://www.markwebberchallenge.com/

Hi Chaparral,
Thank's for explaining that the road was supposed to be closed (for cars?), why we should expect the driver of the car to be penalized in some way? Keep us posted!
