Car Centerline from the tech regs...

Post

It says in 3.7.2 "...forward of a poiint lying 450mm forward of the front wheel centerline, less than 250mm from the car centerline and between 125mm and 200mm above the reference plane."

I dont understand the car centerline. Is it:

1. The centerline of the car from front to rear when viewed from the side?

2. The centerline of the car from front to rear when viewed from the top?

3. The verticle centerline from top to bottom when viewed from the side?

4. The centerline that is paralell to the wheel centerline when viewed from the top?

I cannot find any explanation in the tech regs, so the answer would help alot!

Thanks!

I should with vey little doubt go with your option number 2.

The centerline of the car from front to rear when viewed from the top?

Car centreline: a line from front to rear, exactly in the middle of the car.
Front wheel centreline: a line connecting the front wheel's centres

The rules are talking about the longitudinal centreline; #2.

Thanks!

I have been modeling different front wing configurations, and was beating my face off of this question. It is odd that it isn't more clear in the regs, especially since they take the time to define most other reference items.

Again, my thanks!

As a general rule of engineering, the "centerline" is the symetrical center of the object. Like the rotational center of a cylindrical shaft, or in this case an F1 car, hence view number 2 is the correct one.

But in this context, a front as well as rear view would also display a centerline, though vertical.

However, in the past cars intended for oval racing would sport asymetrical suspention parts, why there would not be a correct centerline if the entire car.

I thought it was #2, but I couldnt find any definitive answer in the regs.

Thanks for the replies, and I should have some front wing interpretations by the weekend.
