Thanks. A 170 degrees or so groove in the upper bearing half sounds like the way to go.

Just to follow up, some more internet digging turned up clevite's catalog which backs up your 'less than 180 in the upper only' groove advice. It says a 140 degree groove in the upper is about optimum.

You can use the oil drilling to core out the main journal thus reducing mass, better for rpm, maybe buy an old f1 conrod TJ if it suits the stroke youre aiming to use.

Both ends of the crank will have a large retaining bolt so will be drilled as much as allowable.

For the conrod, Carrillo's custom rods are not too pricey so not worth trying to adapt a part from something else.
