McLaren MCL35

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Radiators look really wide from front view compared to RB and Ferrari but look tightly packaged from side-rear view! Nose looks slimmer but i think it has more to do with the livery using black sides making it look slimmer!

Mclaren also going for matte livery (awful livery btw)!

Seeing now the studio images...it looks like they tried streamlining it a bit to reduce drag!

The airbox definitely got a unique touch to it.

So teams are converging on the merc style slim nose...
Kinda crazy, the nose rules have been in place basically since 2015, everyone went with as wide as possible with an added thumb for legality reasons, except Mercedes.

Now, the last season with these rules... a bunch of teams go and start thinking that maybe the team that's been winning all these years had it right in the first place.

The change in front wing regs have driven some of that however.

Okay, now we're launched, you can see there's bit different sidepod upper philosophy this year versus most, diverting a lot more air around the sides rather than down off the upper surface, which is much flatter than most cars, they tried this before once and ended up changing back, so it's a little risky.
I think they have better correlation this time though. Do you know if they got promising results in cfd for this concept?

I wouldn't say it looks underdeveloped! I would say it looks low drag...i mean they removed everything from their complex nose and their sidepods look really sleek!

Producing efficient downforce is a thing in Formula 1...but do they produce enough to keep 4th in the WCC?? =P~

Reminds of the narrow sidepod Sauber from a few years back.

The MCL34 did have it last year also!

I just have this uneasy feeling in that I don’t quite think I’ve seen enough to convince me they’re actually going to close the gap to the top 3.
The top 3 look so much more refined especially around the front end. Which we know was a weakness last year. Other than the nose width and cape I can’t see much has changed in this area
