One thing I've noticed is how much faster mercedes is in slow corners (could be the case for all cars, but I've been monitoring them the most so far). For example, bottas' 1.16.6 lap he did an hour ago on yellow tires (C3?) had a minimum turn 12 speed of 143 kmh. His pole lap last year (also C3) had a minimum speed of 135 kmh.
Same story in turn 1. Pole lap last year min speed 162 kmh, hamilton yesterday on Hard tires (C2) already at 170 kmh. I'm telling you the mercedes come Q3 will be 1.5s-2s faster than last year.
No doubt, it's expected. Allison emphasised how they've made the aero more efficient and lost none of the DF points, so they have the same (likely more) downforce levels but far more efficient than last year. Don't wanna sound all high and mighty but I was suggesting multiple times that last year with the dramatic shift on DF at all costs, was nothing more than a sandbox mode philosophy to see if they went all out with it, how far the rubber band would stretch and then next season (i.e. 2020) they would focus on making it efficient. Much like body building where they bulk up first and then start "chiseling" later.
EDIT: I wanted to say they have the same level of DRAG as last year. DF is likely higher now because it's more efficient use of the drag versus last year.
