There was a member of the governments expert panel on the ABC tonight, he said it was better that most ppl got infected now (at the gp) and developed immunity before the virus mutated.

Tbh I was surprised to hear that.
I live in Australia too and haven’t heard anyone from government (here or in any country) say anything like this. This would be quite unprecedented. Even if there is merit to that logic (on which I’m not qualified to comment), I didn’t think such a thing would ever be said publicly. At least not at this point in the virus’ spread.

Do you have a source?
It was part of the corona virus special after the pm’s address. It might be on catchup tv.

Again...it's midnight in Australia! Probably no one is awake to have an official announcement...also they said they'll have a meeting early in the morning to decide if it goes ahead! So in about 2-3 hours we'll have the official announcement!

I bet FOM/FIA/promotors don't want to be the ones who pull the plug - they might hope for the (local) government to call it off

Having fully absorbed and accepted by now that the race is cancelled...if it actually is run, under any circumstances, I'll be overjoyed!

I will take any iteration that results in cars on a track. Limited teams, no crowd in attendance, non-championship points earning race.

Anything. Just give me some F1

There has to be some absolutely epic political gamesmanship going on right now, even by F1 standards!

I don't think so. Still over 4 hours to go before FP1 was scheduled to begin, and things are obviously in major crisis mode right now. They can do whatever they want without much concern for the timing of things.

Consider race weekends with terrible weather; they re-schedule things with little to no warning and develop scheduling plans on the fly.

No need for FOM/FIA/Promotors to pull the plug as it was already declared by the local health authorities the if one of those being tested proves positive the event will be a non starter.
