McLaren MCL35

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Above is McLaren Shadow, even higher, I can’t consider what kind of logo. Perhaps later photos of slightly better quality will appear.

Kinda similar diffuser upgrade to the one Mclaren had made during pre season.

Wow, I definitely wouldn't have expected that much space under that. I really thought it would be filled with radiators or ducts. I don't know how much aerodynamic benefits would it bring if they tightened it up though. I doubt it is significant because that area is not really critical. Just a little more space for the air to hit the rear-wing but it isn't too much. They might be keeping it like that to avoid any heat-related reliability problems, since the benefits of making the bodywork tighter there are not worth the risk of not finishing a race at all.

You’d want to avoid placing anything heavy such as radiators in that space anyway as it would raise the CG too much.

Maybe to draw some further markings for pit stops and/or for pit stop practice.
Definitely weird and probably over engineered if that is its purpose.
