Sainz had a 1.03.601 last year in Austria. I dont remember why he started from behind...101FlyingDutchman wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:25What do you mean our time wasn’t better? Last year fastest lap of the MCL34 in quali was a 1.04.099. Now into the 1.03.6. Id say that is a very decent improvement over a short lap
He had a 1.13.601, not 1.03, this is 10 seconds slower. He had an engine penalty and I believe only went out in Q2 to give Lando a tow.chrisgr wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:38Sainz had a 1.03.601 last year in Austria. He misread it.101FlyingDutchman wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:43Can’t see that time on the official f1 timing charts for Sainz. Was lap time deleted? He had a 1.13.6 in q2 last year. So I’m pretty sure Norris 1.04.099 was the fastest the MCL34 did
haha. Yes you are right. I will have my eyes tested!!! Maybe I am excited from what I saw today and I was just trying to find something negative. Counting hours for tomorrow 's race...FittingMechanics wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:42He had a 1.13.601, not 1.03, this is 10 seconds slower. Sainz had a grid penalty last year though, started at the back.chrisgr wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:38Sainz had a 1.03.601 last year in Austria. Why do you say "for the most part" on merit. What was not on merit today? No one crashed, no one had an engine failure or mechanical issue. Ricciardo is unlikely to have been able to catch us, and the rest I don't think were affected by yellows.SmallSoldier wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 17:07Pretty spectacular start to the season so far, Mclaren exceeded most of my expectations today and had their best qualifying result in years and for the most part on merit!
A lot to be happy about, from the speed of the car to how smoothly every session was run by the team... Yes, Carlos could have also been up there if not for the Yellow flags, but regardless, both cars in the top 10 is what the team was aiming for.
Tomorrow’s race will be a long one and hopefully we will wrap up a great weekend with a positive result.

You are right, I didn’t expressed myself correctly... They got P4 on merit today... Meant to say that it still too early to say that Mclaren is the 3rd fastest teamFittingMechanics wrote:Why do you say "for the most part" on merit. What was not on merit today? This is P4 on merit, 150ms behind Verstappen.
BTW Ferrari could have issues overtaking in the race, they are not as fast on the straights as last year.
Great pointJackles-UK wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 17:18To say that McLaren can say with some legitimacy that they have the third fastest car on the grid is an incredible achievement. Obviously it’s very early days, around one very specific circuit, and they seem to feel that their race pace isn’t quite on terms with Racing Point or even Ferrari but all of the team deserve huge praise for continuing their development from last year.
