Very good gains in S2 and S3 for McLaren versus 2019... Clear improvement from the team!

Phew! First bit of good luck this weekend
That Mercedes improvement though. Imagine finding 1 second on a car that was considered perfect a year ago.SmallSoldier wrote: ↑18 Jul 2020, 18:07Very good gains in S2 and S3 for McLaren versus 2019... Clear improvement from the team!

Agreed, although when one takes a look at everyone else, their improvement year on year on Austria and Hungary shows that they have definitely improved on what was already the Top car last season...Hoffman900 wrote:1 second can easily be accounted for via conditions. We see over that from morning to afternoon sessions in cars way slower.
I have no doubt they're faster, but I would caution comparing single data points from one year to another.
They didn’t improve because they only had one set of new tires for Q3... With the risk of getting rain during that session, the team decided to use the newest tires in their first run while the track was still dry... Their second run was on used Softs and therefore impossible to improve their times.the EDGE wrote:All in all it was a good day for McLaren IMO
Only 2/10ths from 5th in such a close battle midfield battle. I’d like to see their last attempt laps, and why they couldn’t improve like others did
It’s going to be a close battle this year so lots of excitement to look forward too
I must say I’m surprised with the Ferraris, but this a bit of an outlier in terms of characteristics so I’m positive there will be more chances for us through the year as this changes
The pink Mercs seem to be finding their stride now and I’m still hopeful we will Be battling them for third
Obviously hoping for a wet race tomorrow, but even if not I think we have a good chance of moving up the points with the right strategy
Hopefully will be an exciting race whatever the weather and wherever we finish!
Thanks. Was this the case for anyone else too?SmallSoldier wrote: ↑18 Jul 2020, 18:35

Agree with you on this- the particular element is what I think you call “mechanical” grip of the Merc- there is something at the very heart of the car that everything is based around that just allows it to perfectly balance. It never looks like it’s being forced to do something it shouldn’t- unbelievable performance from them and you just have to hold your hands up.101FlyingDutchman wrote: ↑18 Jul 2020, 20:01Well if it was easy then RB would have done it by now.... I think what you see is a team at the absolute pinnacle of the sport. They can engineer gearbox/engine to absolute suit their needs and the aero department on top of that is just sublime. The W11 doesn’t seem to have weaknesses. Apex speed, in low mid and high are as higher then virtually all teams. Suggesting the platform just works.
Having looked at the MCL35 and W11 in winter testing it’s the speed that they’re able to maintain around the corner that sets them apart. Often the w11 has 5/7kmh more which then translates onto long straights after the corners.
Personally I’ve always liked the “lower rake”/larger floor philosophy. As a gut feeling I just think it’s less tricky to get right and has more scope to develop. But there is no reason why you can’t run it close with a higher raked philosophy.
So for me the standout areas are the mechanical and platform (front & rear suspension), aero packaging/low cg. And total aero downforce efficiency.
