Pirelli should be the one handling that. and if they are smart the estimate should always be based on the worst case scenario. In other words if it's 35 to 45 laps they should be telling the teams 35 laps, and if they go over that they are on their own. I do this regularly for my work, because I'm the one that will be held accountable if something goes wrong.

In all honesty, since it's a safety issue Pirelli should be informing the FIA and if limits are not adhered to penalties should be handed out.
Even if they had said 35 laps Bottas was under that in racing conditions anyway (He’d done 34 when they blew).
I know, I think Pirelli is always intentionally vague about issues, so they can minimize looking bad. IMO, it shows a major lack of professional integrity! It's a huge safety concern, imagine a front tire letting go like that in the middle of Eau Rouge, or 130R.

Hopefully this weekend they do their job properly!
We got close to that when Rosberg lost a rear tyre at spa in 2015. Only good timing had it go elsewhere on the track (Blanchimont) IIRC.

it would be really cool if they revived the victory wreath for the podium finishers. That would really hammer home the 70th anniversary celebrations. Theyve already handed out the british auto club trophy so it would be strange if they handed it out again
btw
the GP at Silverstone (and the F1) 70th anniversaries were 2 years ago
it's the WDC that's 70 this year
the 1950 British GP (Silverstone May 13th) aka that year's GP de Europe having been the first ever WDC race

btw 2
this site imagines that the F1 rules changed for 1952 and 1953 period - but they didn't
it was the WDC that migrated to F2 rules for 1952 and 1953

I could easily be wrong, but it's possible that Pirelli's construction models and estimates are informed by data that isn't super up to date? I'm not certain when the last time they got to do a full test with a 2020 F1 car using the current model of tyres was? Wasn't most / all of their testing last year using the 18" tyre?

Pirelli suggested a new construction for the '20 season that was more robust, but the teams rejected it after testing the tires last year. The teams felt like they lost performance with the proffered construction.

Fortunately for Pirelli and the teams, forecast for Sunday is getting cooler by the day.

We're now down to 21-23C from 25-27C a few days ago!
That’s fine. However we are still in a situation where this weeks Hard is last weeks Medium....... :wtf:
...And this is exactly why I preferred the pre-2019 naming convention: super, uber, megasoft :) :)

Members of a technical forum believe that the tire manufacturer provides official specifications in terms "number of laps"...

The "40 laps" is nothing but a dumbed-down message to help the fans understand what they might expect. It is up to teams to interpret the actual technical specifications and decide how far they can push the tires based on their own knowledge of their own cars.

Teams constantly monitor wheel loads and regularly share the data with Pirelli.

By the end of the practice sessions Pirelli should have known exactly how the tyres would behave.

Their only excuse is that their best engineers invariably end up being poached by the teams.

Wonder what sort of trophy they'll have. Presumably they can't or won't give out the gold cup.

I hope they've swept the track. Looking at the parts damaged during Qualifying last weekend, that needed replacing before the race (cuts and gravel, according to James Vowles):-

Car 77: RHS rear tyre (race start set)
Car 05: LHS and RHS rear tyre (race start set)
Car 33: LHS rear tyre (race start set)
Car 31: LHS and RHS rear tyre (race start set)

These tyres were all so badly damaged that they weren't allowed to be run.

Why on earth didn't Sky mention this? It's important information relevant to the strategy choices, let alone the later tyre failures.

I prefer a km range. So far it seems the C1 was only good for ~175km before it started degrading off its cliff.

Vowles also confirms "The failure took places within seconds of each other and given the difference in their tyre condition, it would be unlikely that that's (tyre wear) all of the contribution.

Grosjean did 36 laps on the C2 last weekend (although that's with two Safety Cars). Albon did a pacey 22 laps to finish the race on a used set.
So, qualify on the C3 (if you can), try to stretch it to lap 18, then C2 until the end?

That's going to be a slow set of C3 laps but I don't think it's enough laps to do two C4 stints and make up the time loss of the extra pitstop.

It's also possible that lead drivers will have their side-kicks do the C2 testing and so will have two sets for the race. Something like C3 - C2 - C2 might work as you could build an offset towards the end? Or perhaps C4-C2-C2 if you have to use the C2 to get into Q3?

Just spitballing here though...

What I mean is that it's the trophy for the British Grand Prix and not this one. Nothing to do with what it may or may not be made of.

This is the important bit, tires that did less than a handful of laps in qualifying where so damaged they were deemed unsafe for use in the race....

So for now Hulkenberg is still set to race at The British GP right?
I wonder if they will finally get the car set up correctly without Perez that car looks slow.
