MP4-24 Front suspension oddity

Anybody else noticed the middle element in the MP4-24 front suspension? It's in between the control arms. It's quite visible in the picture linked below. Whatever could it be? Would they have moved the steering arm into the airstream separate from the control arm? That would seem to be less than aerodynamic.

There's some discussion going on here

apparently they did just that - moved steering arm lower.
