Good pace on Mediums and Softs even, though Softs again seem like a tough tire to use in the race even with cooler temps. Maybe irrelevant if it rains though.
That RIC lap was a total outlier (tow?) so not concerned that Renault is far up the road.

RIC did a similar remarkable time in FP2 last race too - ending up 4th. Then they were nowhere in Quali and couldn't get into the points in the race so... not sure what to make of that. It made me double-take though.

Looks like McLaren vs Renault for P7-10 in the dry at the moment, though McLaren do seem to make a lot of progress overnight Fri-Sat this year, so we'll see what they come up with tomorrow.

Personally I think Mclaren as every Friday has lowered the engine and will probably show it tomorrow on the Qualifications. On another note do we have any news regarding Racing Point and if there are gonna be more penalties?

Would Renault know what engine modes McLaren is using?

Actually as a general question, would the engine constructor, more specifically its F1 team know what engine modes the customer is using?

Both in real-time and/or after the race.

Always wondered about this. They are still rivals in the end.

Do they not have a man (or team) embedded at Mclaren? They are still Renault and need a specialist to start do they not?

Of course, that much is known, but is there a borderline of what the factory team can know of what the other team is doing? Especially in real-time as it happens.

Yes there is a Renault man embedded in the McLaren garage but there is a strict firewall vs the Renault F1 team

Wouldn’t you feel much better if McLaren is able to beat them on track? Don’t get too invested in the penalty situation, even Renault have dropped their appeal, meaning the focus is on the track, same for McLaren. Just keeping rooting for McLaren in the race for third.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Definately and I'll keep rooting the team in the race for third but it was mostly a curiosity question regarding that I haven't heard anything new regarding that situation. We seem to be very close at SPA if we take account the Practise 3 times and I think Mclaren will turn up the engine in qualification.

Correction I have now read the news that Renault has withdrawn the appeal. That only leaves Ferrari that appealed. From what I understand the FIA will make rules for next year to restrict what happened this year. Does that mean that RP will be forced to redesign the car and make something themselves?

Not a bad start to Qualifying... Strong lap from Carlos... Lando very close to the rest and losing time in S1 and S2, but is purple on S3.

Close to 4 tenths off Renault so far. Maybe slipstream related?

Renault boys look very quick. You’d think we’ll need a slip stream for our second run given the racing points were on mediums and will go faster

That was too close for comfort... Lando making it to Q3 by 0.008 seconds!!!

But... Both cars in Q3, so job done so far in Qualy... But, it will be close in Q3 with only 0.25 seconds between P5 and P10 in Q2
