There were 3 big factors for Carlos not been able to catch Gasly at the end of the race:Hoffman900 wrote:I think Carlos is every bit as aggressive as Riccardo, but he’s lacking some of Danny Ric’s experience.
I don’t think anyone would have had it, dirty air and the AT was pulling the Mclaren off the corners... some of it is just the time / speed differential, but it was clear the AT had a bit more off the corners where the Mclaren had the top end.
I think Carlos did as good as just about anyone could have given the circumstances. He, and everyone else should be very happy with his performance.
- Gasly built a 4+ second lead on Carlos at the beginning of the restart... Carlos lost time behind Stroll and both Alfa Romeo’s, by the time he was P2 behind Gasly, he had to cut that 4+ second gap.
- Carlos was on 5 lap older tires, Gasly changed to new mediums (from Hards) during the Red Flag, Carlos didn’t had any new mediums and going for Hards wasn’t an option with only 50% of the race left to go.
- Mclaren’s aggressive low downforce setup helped in S1 and S3, but unluckily it cost a lot in S2, especially dealing with the dirty air from Gasly’s car.
At the end, Mclaren earned P2 on merit... Without Hamilton’s penalty and the red flag, we would have finished P2, the pit closure and subsequent penalty to Hamilton helped, but it was nullified by the Gasly’s and Stroll’s luck to again finish P2.
Last season, finishing P2 on merit was inconceivable... The fact that we are a bit disappointed because we didn’t win the race, says a lot about how much the team has progressed... And hopefully they will make a few more strides on what remains of the season.
I have a feeling this won’t be the last podium of the season for the team.
