It's not just he nose Diesel, I bet that the entire RB5 would find plenty of room under that thing's bodywork. Seriously.

They used similar idea last year, although much less radical. Now wih that experience I guess they know what they do. Prototypes run front diffusers for years.

If Renault are really serious with this design, (it appears to be evolving all the time) I think they need to chisel out the section under the nose and relocate their lower wishbones further down the body.

The nose of the R29 is quite wide but isn't that fat as you would think. The venturi channel makes it look fatter. Therefore the lower wishbones can't go much lower since it's hollow underneath. I think it's accually quite thinner than BMW's nose.

And that's Renault’s problem. During the evolution of the car, the aero now does not match the mechanics of the car. If what we are seeing is Renault’s solution to the new regs, then starting from scratch they would have strengthened the sides under the nose and produced a twin keel design.

Aerodynamically it’s evolved into this design already, they just need to work on the oily bits now.

When studying the exhausts on both the R29 as well as the RB5, I wonder to what extent Newey can ask Renault tailor the piping to Red Bull's liking? Anyone?

I believe RB like other customers can put on their own exhausts, airboxes etc...

Airbox is obvious, but I had thought that both inlet trumpets as well as exhaust was part of the engine-delivery?

Perhaps I'll have the time to run something more serious in 3D in the future. I just through together a pair of really quick and dirty 2D runs. At least in 2D, the Renault solution did produce more downforce (and more drag).

I thought they just payed for the powertrain and that it was up to RBR for instance to mount it backwards or upside down?

I would also be surprised if Renault is, apart from the collector, also is responsible for the exhaust or other secundary parts.

@Slimjim: It's just a thought since I know jack sh!t about CFD and aerodynamics in general, but could it be that the lower pressure this creates underneath the nose out way the disadvantage of the drag it produces ?
