How deep was the rut in Sochi at the braking zone for turn 16?



That little rut was only ~3mm deep and was the difference between locking up and nailing the corner.

Then you have to wonder, were Mercedes BS'ing when they told their drivers to stay off the kerbs because they didn't want to lap the field twice? Or does their car have a fragility that aggressive kerb hopping exacerbates?

Perhaps the kerbs damage DAS? At such high speed additional stress might make it a liability? I'm sure they have reasonable margins/tolerance for taking some punishment. But maybe certain kerbs are just too much for DAS?

BTW Ferrari Virtual Academy has a very nice laser scanned version of the Nürburgring GP as well as Mugello. A little dated but it's a cheap game and you can get a feel for the track with a 2010 or 2011 Ferrari F1 car. Assetto Corsa also has a laser scanned version along with the 2017 Ferrari F1 car. iRacing has a laser scanned version, probably the best one as the track has changed slightly since the track was laser scanned for the other games. Race Room has one I think as well, and Rfactor 2 obviously. IDK if any of the codemaster titles have laser scanned versions of tracks.

No were having some fun with the 2mm comment made earlier today.

But obviously you have to take so many different things into consideration also the characteristics of each car is different so some cars might be nastier to handle then others under certain conditions.

I mean if it wasnt such a big deal the teams wouldn't be out there doing track walks with special equipment.

Sorry, you're suggesting that RBR are preparing and other teams aren't? Is RBR the only team to understand the dynamics of the track, and that corner in particular? Might others, who have actually raced F1 cars around this very circuit, also be prepared?

We haven't raced here since 2013, the track is largely similar to then save for a few repaved parts, and that chicane has changed, the kerbs are different. Not a huge change but is a very important corner and I don't see others preparing in a similar way, considering no one has turned a wheel here with the new style cars.

That rut that Hamilton didn't lock a wheel on and yet still posted the purple sector time for? That rut?

If RBR need that corner to be close to Mercedes then it's all somewhat moot, wouldn't you say? The need to get a single corner exactly right, and that's what you're talking about here, means they're clutching at straws, surely.

And how do we know that other teams haven't been and done research on the track before Red Bull?

Not saying that at all, you're saying that. I understand that is your opinion so I won't childishly berate you or claim you're trying to pass off speculation as facts like some disrespectful fanboy.

I will say that this track will be good for RBR, the corners are long and entry oversteer can work for you as there are a lot of corners with entry understeer. So the difficult aspect of the car is actually a benefit. I'm sure Mercedes will be slightly ahead again, but if they make any mistakes pole or a win is not guaranteed.
