I rather Finishing P4 to Renault than RP.
Agreed. Renault deserve it over RP. But it's a real shame seeing McLaren dip in form and even Ferrari might be faster now. If Vettel hadn't given up this year Ferrari would be much closer in the points. Are AT faster now? McLaren are not looking in a good place recently. Think the first few races this season have flattered McLaren.
Looks like if these new updates aren't enough. McLaren are saying they are working as expected so there's not much more Norris and Sainz can do. McLaren are 6th fastest at best at the moment and will do well to hang onto 4th in the constructors.
What will be the reasoning from McLaren and people here if McLaren finish 5th even 6th in the constructors? What will be the positive spin? Genuine question.
I wouldn’t say that the car is the “6th fastest”, performance varies so much from race to race and we have had a few unrepresentative once lately too (like Germany)... Also a couple races were external factors masked performance (Sainz in Mugello, Norris in Portimao).
After listening to Carlos in the post race interview, he mentions that they were probably 2-3 tenths faster than the guys in front of them, but it just wasn’t possible to overtake in Imola without a huge pace difference (Perez attack on Leclerc on new Softs versus very old Hards is a good example of that)... They could have setup the car also more towards race pace than qualifying pace.
Positive spin of finishing 5th or 6th? I don’t think there will be a positive spin if that’s the case... I wouldn’t call it a disaster of a season or that the team trails the midfield, simply they couldn’t maximize points when they needed to and that would be the result of those mistakes during the season (Pitstop issues in the first half for example).
So far they are 10 points away from what they achieved last season in terms of points (145) with 4 races to go and in a shorter season... I don’t think the doom and gloom is warranted.
