Purely for visual impact it’s the worst F1 accident since Berger’s fiery crash at Imola Tamburello 1989.
It’s incredible he wasn’t seriously injured, if he’d been injured he wouldn’t have been able to exit the car. I did think that just prior to Gro’s appearance the medical car driver was planning on entering the fire to try to pull him out. van der Merwe did say they practice “a lot of stuff”, recovering a driver from a burning vehicle through? I suppose he is wearing flameproof gear but the heat would have been immense.
