We hear that the KERS will provide 80 extra HP, but will that be for every corner? Will the system charge up every lap? I hope it will take a while to charge up, so that it's use is left to the driver on how and when he wants to use it. If that is the case, if I use my KERS at 70% capacity and pass you, but you save yours and pass me lap later at 100% thus pulling away a bit more then that will make a difference. Then if I use my KERS to block and have only 20% while you have, say, 80% you'll pass me with a bit more ease I think, (not taking into account other drivers in that corner or other blocking moves, etc.)
To my understanding its only allowed to store a certain amount of energy for a percentage of a given lap(something like a few seconds worth). It doesn't "carry over" from lap to lap since that's all you can get it to store(ie finite capacity of a battery or the rpm of a flywheel). And I think that much is probably available for every lap since I am guessing the energy that CAN be recovered is much more than the energy that's actually ended up being stored due to the limit. I think the rule limits it to being driver activated. Though I wonder if it'll be more effective if it is programmed into being engaged for certain part of the lap automatically...
I was hoping it would be driver activated, kinda like a push-to-pass button in Champ Car. I remember those things took a while to charge up. Not familiar with the works of that technology, but I was hoping the KERS would be available to the driver when needed.
I need to read more about the KERS. I doubt thought that they will be able to charge up the system with just one lap. Anyway, let me see if I can find a KERS specific thread around here and start posting there. Thanks anyways guys.
There is a limit to the amount of energy that a KERS device can store up and release in one lap (400J), the maximum output/input of any KERS is 60KW.

The FIA have also introduced a rule that stop the KERS from recharging during the stationary period during a pitstop. However, it does not state that the cars cannot charge KERS whilst waiting for the Green light on the grid, or entry or exiting the pitlane when the limiter button is pressed.

The driver is the only one that can release the energy in the KERS device, nothing can be automated.

As the paint was applied to the front suspension, air travelling over the front wing through the suspension arms isn't being carried to the main plane of the rear wing. Therefore the levels of turbulence will be less than last years levels with an 09 spec wing
If you'd bothered to do as I suggest, and googled the cfd images of previous cars - you'd see that the front wing had little impact on them.

Once more - you cannot tell anything about the turbulence levels, neither intensities or length scales on the rear wing from that dye test. Nor can any guesstimation of mean flow angle of incidence on the wing be guessed.

I agree, turbulance is very 3-D, something that isn't easily seen from the visulisation paint.

Its the FW30 with the 09 Livery.

Can you imagine how much trouble they would be in if they had already redesigned the sidepods and overhauled the nose cone again?!?!?

I guess they used the fw30 due to the testing limitations. Prehaps it was a sponsor comitment thing and they did not want to waste testing miles in an unideal environment. So they just rolled out last years car....said here is the new livery and thanks to all our sponsors.

With both cars on the track close together I think it's clearly a PR/Marketing operation - filming for adverts.

What happened to McLaren's orange testing livery? Either I never knew why they don't use it anymore or I forgot. Thanks in advance.

They only use the orange when they don't have a definitive livery for the next season..
