Could just be studying how air flows behind the bargeboard. Part of the validation process, you have to study what you're planning to focus on. Flowvis is the first step, that just shows you where they're looking at, likely already found something in CFD or the wind tunnel that they can improve in that area. So you test and see if stuff is doing what it's doing, then you start iterating in the background. There's a limited amount of airflow and getting enough to go to the floor is tricky, because the bargeboards can use some of that airflow themselves. Trying to get the best of both worlds so to speak will be the trick the nose is supposed to address. Big fat cape to channel as much airflow behind the bargeboards as possible(delaying the floor from stalling) so you can stop worrying and just have a really strong 250 vortex to energize the bargeboards.

Next year the bargeboard vortex will need to be stronger to make up for the floor area that will go missing so getting the airflow right at the front will be critical. McLaren already has a rear biased COG which makes them understeer at low speeds, perhaps the loss of the floor will make the car more pointy. Who knows.

McL frontwings old(top) new(below) the new follow same trend as rb, who also launched a new version for max, where less elements attach to the y250 area and instead free float. I know we need believe in ourselves but its always to get confirmed by rb's that they follow same path for next year. Maybe both trying to strengthen the y250 to seal the floor because they cant rely on floor slits to help??

The Mclaren has the same number of elements in the y250 area - 3. The changes made just show that the bottom flap's tip now picks up higher than it did before. This is also introduced with related changes in the baredgboards which receive these vortexes.

On the RB, the mainplane section seems to have been revised back to a more conventional arrangement where it doesn't conform with the upper flaps any more.

The y250 always seal the floor and you'd ideally want the outwash as strong as possible regardless of floor slits.

Look at this! The unpainted nose shows the various sections it is composed from. Some are structural and stiffer, others have an impact absorption and aero function.

That is fascinating! Why is that nose stripped of paint? never seen that before. Surely they cant paint at the track? Is it a transport nose or something?

I’m not even sure if it is painted or wrapped. Looks like it was done on purpose, I doubt they would use the most recent spec part for transport. And teams can and will paint parts trackside if they need to.

the base (orange) layer is definitely paint because the team partner Sikkens talks about it all the time. The graphics/logos on top of that are stickers.

I think its one that got damaged in battle so it was paint stripped and given the filler and sandpaper treatment.

I'd be interested in if you have a source on that? Because I've never heard of paintshop staff being part of the travelling crew let alone some sort of mobile paintshop that goes to continental races let alone flyaway ones.

The biggest change from a visual perspective will be the reworking of the bargeboards and cape to work better together. I'm glad they used 2020 to learn about how to proceed, which means their cape and bargeboards should be better optimized for next season.
