Has it been made clear which is the driver and which the reserve?
It's got to be Albon as reserve. Cruel as that may be, it's crueler to have Perez literally breathing down his neck and the team waiting for the first mistake. It'll ruin the boy.
We have the 'young driver test' - would be interesting to have something like a 'driver shootout test'. A test day dedicated to this purpose. Would be cruel/stressful but might be a way to rotate some drivers in and out more fairly and regularly?
Agree. It's a bit cutthroat but it's probably the fairest way of doing it if you have a genuine driver conundrum. I think if I were Albon I'd much rather that than them saying 'you have the seat but the first mistake you make then Perez is in the car'. It's just setting him up to fail. Then likewise if they put Perez in and say the same, you're just wrecking two drivers by making them too afraid to take any risk and make any mistakes.
The team hasn't handled this Albon situation well, really. (or their second seat at all since Ricciardo left) They owe it to him just to be clear and decisive one way or another. Sure they want the right partner for Verstappen but it shouldn't be at the expense of potentially wrecking the careers of other drivers.
