Force India VJM02

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Will the VJM02 improve the teams constructors standings compared to '08?

No - because they are laid up on the same tool...

(At least - in a perfect world they will not be different)

But - I can assure you, due to the myriad of problems in composite manufacturing, there will be small differences between the chassis - no doubt this is related to drivers preferring one chassis over another.

If you don't know what I mean by drape - a simple anology - if you throw a chequered tablecloth over a table, it sits in whatever way it lands.

Now, stick a glass on the table and throw the same table cloth over it - no matter what you do, you will never get the same angles of chequers you had before - due to the presence of the glass deforming the fabric.
I have studied the Competition Car Composites book rather thoroughly, so I had a very good idea what you meant! And Yes, with the deformations present, even from the same mold, they would never all be 100% the same.

I was just trying to make light of the previous argument by splitting hairs somewhere else...

Thanks!

Those areas are considered bodywork, but the actual chassis/monocoque may be as similar as legally posible. We'll never know for sure.
sorry to quote from so many pages back, but I thought the shape of the airbox was largely governed by the rol hoop which it integrates...does that not mean the airbox is part of the monocoque itself? Thus displaying one (admittedly very very very minor) difference, possibly alluding to more differences between these two chassis?

BTW I really don't want to send this thread back into a long spiral of nonsence, its just that I thought the airbox was part of the chassis, and I was seeking clarification on THAT matter - not whether the chassis are the same (I think we've all had enuff of that for a while!)

@AeroGT3 - common now, mean like how Eddie Jordan called his cars the EJ## or Franks Williams calls his the FW##. I mean they both called their entire teams after themselves, by your measure does that mean both these men detract from the work of their many employees by claiming it their own? No need to hate the man for hatings sake.

I believe the discussion began with the question of to what extent the FI held any technical influence from McLaren.
I for one would be surprised as well as disappointed if it didn't have a lot, when McLaren should have an interest in having a reasonably compeititive B-team, just as Ferrari had with Sauber. I also think that the rapid dismissal of Gascoyne was the result of that.

One of the problems I see with a forum such as this, is that it's easy to make fact-alike statements and neglect to elaborate for those of a different opinion, leading to much frustration.

I hope you are not implying that Frank Williams is a "self aggrandising........." [-X

FW & Patrick Head have earned the right not to be sneered at. They live and breathe F1, F1 is the sole reason the business exists/ Williams Grand Prix ENGINEERING (I emphasise "engineering").

Is it not possible for Vijay to share the same passion for the sport?

He clearly loves the sport, he loves the team and he wants it to succeed. They seem to be going in the right direction, and for the first time in a long long time they look to have a good car. Force India is a team which is in it for the long run.

Aero - On what terms do you judge VJ as a "aggrandizing prick."? Have you met him?

of course he's not calling Sir Frank names, and while I see yout point RH1300S that Williams Grand Prix engineering is F1 thru and thru, where as FIF1 is just a business venture to Mallya, axle does have a point in that over the years team bosses have called their cars after themselves. Many call the whole team after themselves. There's nothing wrong with that. The owner of the team has the right to do things like this...hell its Mallya's money that bought that team, he can do what he wants with it.

The FW31 IS frank williams. Frank williams is that team. It's his team. He built it from the ground up. He's been in F1 since before computers really existed.

Mallya came in, bought the team, and slapped his name all over everything. The about the team has a bio of him but not of the drivers, technical staff, etc.

Mallya doesn't love the sport. F1 is a publicity stunt for him. He probably has invested more time getting an MTV show in india to feature his team than and other PR crap than actually making the team competitive.

Shame then that the VJM comes from Vijay, Jan, Michiel after the co-owners of the team...

You are right though, Vijay doesn't love the sport - that's why he was competing in an old Ensign way back in the early 80's
