Aston Martin AMR21

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This car certainly looks like it should bring Vettel in to the mix this season. Merc PU, Merc rear suspension, Merc-inspired aero. That's going to make things a bit more interesting this season.

Re: the shrink wrap engine cover and certain similarities, is the consensus amount you guys that FI/RP/AstonMartin have worked ‘rather closely’ with Merc again?

It’s not an exact copy like last year but could we see any grumbling from a few other teams?
Almost certainly not. They are similar because the rear half of the car is mechanically identical so shrink wrapping it is always going to give you a similar shape. There's more than enough differences to put a stop to any grumbling right away

And with how much the regulations have been changed to avoid another RP 2020 situation every team have access to the same amount of tech to copy each other, mainly pictures/videos from the side of the track, so if one team copies another it's not going to be anything the other teams can't do as well and so it goes back to how copying was before in f1, always there.

Loads of people made fun of the situation last year for it just being a pink Mercedes complaining that's why they were fast, but the rival teams must be worried because it's one thing to copy a car and aero visually, it's another very different step to make it work as well as RP did on their first try, only missing out on the third constructor spot because of their doxed points.
Williams had a lot of inspired part on their 2018 car and it looked fast on photos but ended up not working because of their technical engineering not working well, opposite to that Aston looks to have a very capable technical team.

It's nonsense.

The slim nose. Almost everyone went to it. Probably only Ferrari and Haas will stay with wide nose, and probably only because of limited rules.
Yes, they chose to make identical copy, but of the best car on the grid. Who wouldn't?
Front wing was also identical on reveal of RP20, but they slightly changed upper element.

Those things. Everyone went for horizontal ones, except Williams. But they not yet revealed this year's car.
Yes, they again chose to be identical to Mercedes. But who wouldn't if they can?

Boomerang wings on RP20 was identical to W10, but they changed it during the season on their own design. They still have their own design.

Sidepod inlets. Mercedes was the last to go on high inlets. RP20 had middle inlets, which is a copy of W10. But RP19 had high inlets, before Mercedes, so AMR21 high inlets can't be a copy of Mercedes. The shape of the sidepods looks different too.

Engine cover. If you look at shark fin area of RP19 car (before a copycat RP20) you can see it's similar shape as Mercedes. Which means they have similar packaging. And they have it before they decide to copy Mercedes. Which is logical with same engine. And they are using it for years. It's also logical that McLaren can't have the same shape in their first year with Mercedes engine.
With engine covers shrinking every year, it's logical they went to almost the same shape.

Also some changes to the front wing and the gearbox/t-wing wing compared to last year

Definitely lower downforce in the rear then.

1. Does it look like they are running more rake (28 sec) on that car?

2. (52-53 sec) as the car goes into (or exiting) a right there looks to be a massive roll on to the left rear, looked quiet odd considering that could mess the aero.

Or the diffuser throat is making enough and they can back off the rear wing. They have the Merc rear suspension this year and it was designed specifically to make the diffuser work better. So total rear down force can actually be up.

I guess he is referring to the smaller front wing which indicates that they had to lower DF on the front to rebalance the lost downforce on the rear.

Bingo.

The front wing 2nd plane is also at a lesser andgle off attack too.

Nope, i don't think so. Besides, it's a shake down at Silverstone wasn't it ? One of the least advantageous for high rake. You spend so much of the race above 130-150KPH, you never un-squat.

The whole purpose for high rake is to help you get on full throttle sooner. At 150KPH, you can safely hit full throttle without wheel spin.

Is this their second (and last) filming day?
