Vodaphone McLaren Mercedes MP4-24

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

the rear edge of the cut has a forward lifted lip on it, as if trying to direct more airflow down under it..

It looks like an airfoil profile at the leading edge of the cut. It could be working (also) as a wing. Though it would be a very strange place to put a profile with all the turbulence from the rear tyre.
It is indeed, thats why i am thinking this device will reduce the negative effects of the wheels

Hmmm,
The way this is shaping up means those rear tyres will have a lot less drag. Remember rear slicks create one of the highest drag parts on the car.

I wonder how that complies with flat bottom regulation.

It'll be doing bog all to reduce the wheel drag folks - remember, that comes primarily from the wake, not a small change to the stagnation point.

Scarbs tried to explain in his article - but it wasn't perfectly clear to me. I think the summary was that the car only has to be flat on the bottom where there is bodywork directly above it when viewed from below. Because they don't have the winglets in that area any more there is no longer any body work above where that cutout is. Hence it doesn't need to be flat.

The way I get it the floor must cover the "shadow" of the bodywork and must be flat.
Absence of lipups allows to not have the floor there to cover their "shadow", but it still must be flat.

Has anyone picked up on the steps in the Mclaren's rear wing seen in the picture below.

So that's another rear wing on show. Could they be trying every piece of aero they can before the ban on testing comes in to force? What do people think?

everything is getting more clearer and clearer, mclaren is having problems with the rear end, both on tyre wear as downforce.

Could well be. Also, is this rear wing in the photo illegal? The centre section seems to be higher than the endplates.

Heikki's times, his quickest lap wasn't done on 'fumes', third lap of eight. More worrying for macca is the lack of long stints, I think the longest one was eleven laps but again, only testing so who knows!

In my opinion the nosecone has become wider..

Surely the elements that keep the front wing on to the nosecone are standing wider with the new package. And it's like the new nose is a little bit lower than the old one.

Anyone noticed the new outlets? They seem bigger for extra cooling I think.

The diffuser is still the same I think.

Ferrari copied McLarens front wheel fairings, although they are smaller.

Tomorrow they have the same program as today so I don't expect any surprises tomorrow.

I have a theory for McLaren's slow testing pace. Could it be that they are getting data for their simulator? Let me explain. Since there is no testing in season they will try to use their simulator effectively to test the effect of new components. To be able to use the simulator they have to validate their simulation models and this requires special tests that not necessarily gives the fastest lap.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one.

That's an interesting theory, and could be true. I'm looking forward to finding out everyone's true pace.
