Every auto racing tournaments in the world steering linear actuator types

Post

Here are the list of all auto racing tournaments in the world steering linear actuator types:
FIA Formula 1 World Championship - Hydraulic power steering rack and pinion (not sure about it)
FIA Formula 2 Championship - Manual steering rack and pinion
FIA Formula 3 Championship - Manual steering rack and pinion
Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup - Electromechanical power steering rack and pinion (not sure about it)
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (coupe silhouette -> sedan silhouette -> coupe silhouette -> coupe Class 1 silhouette) - Power-assisted steering rack and pinion
IndyCar Series - Variable-assisted manual steering rack and pinion
NASCAR Cup Series - Power with recirculating ball
NASCAR Xfinity Series - Power with recirculating ball
NASCAR Truck Series - Power with recirculating ball
FIA World Endurance Championship - Full-power steering rack and pinion (all classes - not sure about it)
FIA World Rally Championship - Power-assisted rack and pinion
Australian Supercars Championship - Power assisted rack and pinion
Japanese Super GT Series - Power-assisted steering rack and pinion (GT500) and various (GT300 - not sure about it)
Japanese Super Formula Championship - Electric power steering rack and pinion
FIA World Touring Car Championship later World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) - Electrical power-assisted rack and pinion steering

Any additions? Correct me if i wrong!

DTM is switching to full electric servo fly-by-wire steering.

please explain the above seemingly remarkable statement

aircraft control surface actuators categorised as 'all-electric' are of course internally hydraulic
'fly-by-wire' means digital numeric processing in the control loop - and no alternative load path (ie manual reversion)

I wonder if the WRC is thinking of heading the steer-by-wire route in some future regulation change.

It's called Space Drive, https://the-race.com/touring-car/why-a- ... ional-car/

Its apparently an amazingly good system, with excellent steering feedback, massive redudancy. Its going to be a game changer for road car packaging in the future.

well I thank you ....

presumably using its driver-aid potential will be prohibited in racing
(existing) PAS hides low grip from the driver
handily for the track this SD would eliminate so-called bump steer

whatever happened to the Citroen SM ?

Bumpsteer is purely kinematic, it has nothing to do with the power steering. There is a little cross compliance from the torsion bar but that's another thing completely.

exactly ..... unlike existing steering systems .....
the Space Drive won't have a steering linkage layout that's kinematically conflicted with the suspension linkage layout

I don't know

I thought the matter under discussion was the Space Drive - not conventional steering systems

You were explaining to us how steer by wire gets eliminates bumpsteer and kinematic constraints present in conventional systems. Neither of these assertions seem correct to me.

'full electric servo fly-by-wire' steering doesn't need any steering linkages (ok the DTM/WRC version of SD does)

and FESFBW steering ....
doesn't need to be truly continuous (most PAS isn't)
would be safer than most PAS

sincere question - why steer the front wheels ? (ok why not ?)

Drive by wire still have steering linkages. Bumpsteer is still present but it's a desired characeristic. You can't get rid of it with a SBW system anyway.

Steering the rear wheels is dynamically unstable. It's also subjectively terrible - the car feels like it over-rotates before entering the curve and each steering input causes a first reaction of the lateral acceleration in the opposite direction before swinging back. That's, btw, part of the reason why it's dnyamically unstable.

not if there's rotary actuators (working on the steering axes eg steering struts)
so 2 actuators (or maybe 4)
