Did anyone hear Max on the radio complaining about "engine braking", I assume he was talking about the energy recovery?
From memory it's not the first time I heard him complaining about it, last race weekend he was saying the same.
Why is it something they can't resolve for him?
Driving style related?
It was revealed by Peter Windsor that Max is an early breaker.. i feel the engine braking is messing with how he predicts and manipulates the car's behavior on turn in.

The F1 website has redbull as the quickest in qualy pace and race pace. It seems they were using fuel loads and worn tyres to mask their pace? But Merc will be fighting with Ferrari. Redbull have the advantage here.
For Sure!!

And that's how you know Libery/F1 is nothing but a bunch of people turning out hype to generate clicks and subscriptions.

This is was their prediction from yesterday, "calculated from FP2 sector times & car data analysis".

I think for the sector times they combined all the fastest mini-sectors from the driver to identify a premium laptime. The car data analysis stuff I have no idea.

We discussed before where we thought this is what is happening.

The only issue with mini sectors is in order to he fast in one, you may compromise the sector before and after, which is never really attainable in an actual lap.

Bad for Mercedes. Twice as much risk of not getting good time due to potential crash here and there. Or just traffic.

Who is saying this?

if you look at the fp2 lap time document that eventually got posted, no one did their best time after 1 lap.

Not really though. As they will just have to go out 70 seconds earlier and do 2 warm up laps. Only 1 timed lap, so they will still have an equal chance of being held up or going through yellow flags.

Insight from careful observation and reading between the lines.

Basically Merc drivers and engineer complaining about tyre warm-up corroborates my observations.

No doubt they are going to be working on getting warm-up down to one lap tomorrow, but don't be surprised of they end up needing two laps!

Apparently they not only use the sectors to judge. I think the FIA go beyond lap time and look on certain conditions they are fully aware of like fuel, tyre wear, engine performance etc. But they say Redbull will be the best car, and when you see Max extra talking and playing down his pace, it just confirms what they uncovered.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas has highlighted Mercedes’ ongoing tyre warm-up issues in Monaco, as he admitted that other teams may have an advantage over the Silver Arrows when it comes to getting the Pirelli compounds working on the streets of the Principality.
He pointed out that he couldn’t warm up the tyres enough to get them into the right performance window, and added that the car’s slow-corner performance and stiffness over bumps was inadequate.

“Today, for the first lap, I couldn’t get them [the tyres] to work yet. We need to work hard tomorrow and try to figure it out. I feel like some cars might have a bit of an advantage to us on that,” he explained.

“I feel like from my side I’m lacking quite a bit of front end on this track,” added Bottas. “We’ve been facing issues a little bit on some tracks in the mid-corner, but it’s mainly small-speed corners. If you don’t have the feel of the front, if it’s going to turn in or not, you’re going to lose easily quite a bit of time.

Cloudy, no single sunshine at the moment. So cooler track temperature.
