but doesnt the tyre performance envelope also drop off pretty steeply after 4 laps if you want to do qualifying lap times? Its not like hamilton cruised around for 4 laps so I would say the differences would be relatively much closer

Should have BANNED him actually ... jokes aside, judging by most articles about this the three place grid drop is already quite harsh and some (including Bottas himself) did not even expect a penalty - it was most certainly the "oh well we tried something and it didn't work" part that resulted in the penalty, had he just spun out without that little experiment then he might have gotten away with a reprimand.
I think if they so worried about pit stop systems that have not been the cause if any dangerous situations yet then this is about the least that they could do for something that did go wrong
To mix that with this error shows how biased your opinion is.Datco wrote: ↑25 Jun 2021, 20:25I think if they so worried about pit stop systems that have not been the cause if any dangerous situations yet then this is about the least that they could do for something that did go wrong
But I agree it is getting ridiculous. Merc are part of the problem of causing this situation
Talking about biased, Bottas and his team are idiots trying to pull away in second gear to speed up the process. He could have hit someone with that dumb test.siskue2005 wrote: ↑25 Jun 2021, 20:29To mix that with this error shows how biased your opinion is.Datco wrote: ↑25 Jun 2021, 20:25I think if they so worried about pit stop systems that have not been the cause if any dangerous situations yet then this is about the least that they could do for something that did go wrong

A few of the teams talk about the new technical directive in the pits:
Alpine's Alan Permane tells #AMuS: It was high time something happened. The rules demand that humans give the order. If you analyze Red Bull's pit stops, then some processes are below the human response time
Andreas Seidl tells #AMuS: We welcome the FIA initiative because safety at pit stops is very important to us. It's good that it comes now before something happens. The pit stops have become an important battlefield the teams fight hard.
#AMuS Alfa Romeo sports director Beat Zehnder claims: "If you stick to the rule, pit stops under two seconds are not possible."
#AMuS The competition saw a certain automation in this: "At Red Bull, the cars have already been lowered, the impact wrenches were still in the wheel nuts.
#AMuS It was all a single process, started by the sensor message after the wheel nuts were tightened. Press the button, lower it, remove the impact wrench, drive off
Yes the fia is banning automation of pitstops, as evidenced by team principals comments.
What happened to bottas is just an error, a 3 place drop is just too harsh. We have seen much much worse going un punished
You realize Max has done the equivalent several times this year right?
I can’t remember who, but one of the ex-F1 driver sky commentators said that that it was usual for drivers to start wet races in second gear, Not something special that Max does alone
What are standing waves?Juzh wrote: ↑25 Jun 2021, 17:36hamilton's deleted lap vs verstappen's "P1" lap from fp2:
Basically equal on straights, maybe honda has 2-3 kmh on the very top end, but not on acceleration. Hamilton took it very slow on the start of the lap, that's why his initial speed on start finish line is a bit lower, but it's more or less the same from then on.
Hamilton gains time in in T6 and T7 left handers. Verstappen is a tiny bit compromised by the car mid corner but doesn't lose too much, around 1 tenth trough that T6-7-8 complex (come to think that's quite significant with such tight margins). I'd say hamilton did gain time by going over track limits. Not enough to lose P1 but probably like half a tenth.
Another observation: standing waves for hamilton at 0:49. Near identical car shuddering as seen spa and hungary pole laps in 2020:

No point in talking to blind fansepo wrote: ↑25 Jun 2021, 20:42That makes it even worse, let him try that on the grid not in the pit lane as he obviously can't control the car like Max can.
